They almost outed him at slashdot with meta data left in the photos. Looks like he's from OK. »it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=···14748871 SLUG: mag/hacker DATE: 12/19/2005 PHOTOGRAPHER: Sarah L. Which brings up the next point, of interest now, I'm sure, to all photojournalists: can you easily edit the exif data in a photo? I understand that in this case, it wasn't exif data, but metadata the photog put in there (they don't make cameras with gps yet ), but...
In this case, it was simply the photog's carelessness (and thoughtlessness---while I hate what that guy has done, if he's given a guarantee of anonymity by the mag, it's their responsibility to honor that and not put his location ANYWHERE.)
There is some poetic justic, however, to him being located by technology....IF this isn't a plant to put people off his trail ---maybe he's really in New York.

I was looking at a few pics I have stored locally and they don't have all of the detail information. Is this a "feature" of photoshop type apps? |

You need to look at the exif data (with an exif reader or an app that supports it), which usually includes the make of camera, lens, fstop, etc. You can ADD metadata like where the pic was taken, what project it was for, etc. which is what it seems this photographer did. The camera can tell what settings you used, what camera, the date and time, but so far can't tell where the pic was taken or why .
