Maybe I am just ignorant and completely missing something... but exactly what benefits am I supposed to be reaping from this Google/telco spat???

Don't be silly!

You win the right to pay more for less! You'll gain the "freedom" to pay higher rates for the same access you're used to now...

and let's not forget, You'll have more "choices"... like to "choose" between Option #1: Pay more and Option #2: No service at all.
