In addition to Skipdawg's comment.
Personally, given all the past/current M$ OS and program security problems I wouldn't have much faith in a firewall from M$, especially if it's part of the OS. |

The core of the OS is great, just the shell sucks. Also to not sway this off topic, I'd run a program with the built in firewall, or if you could just run a firewall with out the built in one (to save some resources). -- »gameboyrom1.tripod.com/gameboyrom/index.html : My Web Site Be sure to join the SETI, Discovery, Folding, Genome, Ecology, and RC5 |

It will help, but you should also use ZA or whatever. -- 1289 days later I bought another computer! |

Well, not too many things would. The answer to the man's original question was whether the built in XP "firewall" would be enough. I will have to lean to the no side of an answer, just because it IS microsoft. Mess around with Tiny or ZA, see what happens. Run a security scan here at DSLR or go to »www.grc.com and run Steve's leaktest and portscanner...BTW we have that here also. -- "That's what we call pillow talk, baby.."-Bruce Campbell, Ash, Evil Dead 3-Army of Darkness |

| reply to Anon I haven't had a chance or desire to play around with XP and its firewall yet but my understanding is (and I may be wrong ) that XP's firewall only takes care of inbound attempts. It does not protect you from outbound leaks and if that's the case, in my opinion it's not a complete or effective solution. |

| I can't provide a shot of the ICMP options for ICF as I completely disabled its service, however they are very few.
Here's a shot where you configure what you allow... Pathedic isn't it?
Conclusion: Get a REAL firewall, ICF doesn't even have the configurability of any decent routers. -- I will show you how to fish, however I will not catch your fish for you. [text was edited by author 2001-10-07 04:31:38] |

| reply to Anon I am sad for all of the new xp users (the ones that buy a preloaded xp from a store). They think they have a good firewall. Here is a good idea for all of the stores that sell computers: place a link to dslr security forum on every desktop. -- Donate blood |

| You can only control: 4 Inbound ICMP types 4 Outbound ICMP types
So it allows the rest to flow through like YOU HAVE NO FIREWALL AT ALL -- I will show you how to fish, however I will not catch your fish for you. |

The TCP/IP filtering option that you posted is an existing option coming from NT and later on W2K. I'm not sure if it's related to the new XP firewall. If that's the firewall they are talking about then NT has a firewall too. I doubt that this would be the only feature. In fact in NT you can do it separately for each adapter. |

| There is more, however I don't remember which services are required for ICF to work so I can't post a screenshot. It had options like 'Block inbound packets your not listening for', but that would still allow problem since these NT systems listen on ports like 5000, 135, and many many more!
If someone could post a screen shot of the ICF options that would be useful -- I will show you how to fish, however I will not catch your fish for you. |

| reply to Anon Those who bash it and say 'get Tiny', erm it is Tiny. MS licensed the engine and took out the outbound part. It is perfectly adequate in dealing with incoming, not perfect but adequate. It gets the same results as Tiny from Shields Up and is certainly better than nothing. I run the 'real' Tiny because of the outbound protection. -- www.indiemonkey.com
