I only use the mail program. I installed all the other stuff when I got EL DSL, but it slowed the computer to a crawl, so I uninstalled it. The mailbox program is fine, don't bother with the rest. |

| reply to beckyky When you get your ADSL Modem just place it into Bridge Mode (you must hook to it one time with a single PC directly to do this) and after that then you can add the Router into the connection.

When hooked up to the ADSL Modem, simply setup your Router to handle PPPoE (enter your username/password only into the Router) and tell it to connect ("always on" type of connection if the option is given).

| reply to beckyky Becky, you may have noticed a pattern... you won't find too many knowledgeable people that run or even suggest running software supplied by *any* ISP. Ease of support and claims on ads drives ISP software - far more than your system's integrity.
But if you can't say something nice about something, say nothing... so...
That stuff probably matches support scripts best... |

| reply to beckyky I'll take Doc's comment a bit further -
There have been any number of posts over the past couple of years that STRONGLY suggest you NEVER install the software that comes on the CD. Some people have had their PC's software corrupted due to conflicts, etc.
Your best bet is to make sure you don't connect your PC(s) directly to the dsl modem - get a firewall/router first. |

| reply to beckyky You do not need to install any software to use Earthlink (Dial-up or ADSL) and if you already have programs that you use for email and for security then you should stick with what works** for you (**as long as that means you are running a Firewall and Anti Virus software that is updated and active). You do not have to place the Total Access CD into your PC at all. I never have.

| I have a couple of questions ... Is there any benefit to using the direct access software ? I use Outlook Express for email and news , and I don't want it changed in any way . Any suggestions ?
I use several security softwares that I find to work very well. Will I have conflicts if I allow Earthlink's security software to also run ?
Thanks for any advice . Becky |
