Re: Macworld magazine privacy issues said by obeythelaw:yeah, its good that they know about it. however, according to that response it seems as if its not always like that. i hope that aren't blowing us off and actually fix it. Well that would be silly now wouldn't it? Considering the fact that hundreds now know and if it's not fixed we'll just sit on our thumbs and not alert the rest of the Mac World? (pun intended) If the presidents account is open for full view...I'll bet there is someone getting dressed to go in and plug the hole as we speak. |

We're not talking about clicking on a box that says "show all the user" and removing a checkbox.
We're talking about macworld re-writing their subscription frontend application. It's got to be planned, designed, written, tested, and implemented.
You're not asking them to do something trivial here. The president told you it was a contract job, which means that the web company that wrote it is probably not very large, and doesnt have three shifts worth of people to get a problem fixed like MS or apple does.
I think the best solution here is to keep sending Macworld email to let them know you're still paying attention and that your data is still vulnerable. Make sure that the important people keep it on the top of their todo list until its done.
Sending the executives of Macworld a screenshot of their addresses with the current date on it, once a week, would probably get the point across nicely. -- I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend your right to encrypt it. |

I was writing nearly the same thing but...what they could have done was to take that page down and replace it with a "Sorry for the inconvenience, the On-Line subscription service is temporarily off-line for maint..." etc etc... They don't have to leave it up. That would have been a simple flip of a "switch" |

 | reply to Sid Oh Crikey.
By the way, that's my old home address. Please don't bother the people there.
I sent a note to Jason Snell about it. He says it's a third party subscription service that handles hundreds of other magazines. They have instructions to stop it with any means necessary. |

Perhaps a spot on TWiT didn't appeal to them, eh?
Edit: from Leo via email: "It will be on the next twit - I've already flagged it!" |
|
 | reply to Sid Actually, I got Leo's e-mail after we had already pulled down the e-mail option.
The president of Mac Publishing, publishers of Macworld, has told our circulation people to solve this problem. First step: get rid of the e-mail lookup option. Second steps to increase security in other ways still forthcoming.
This subscription functionality is provided via a third-party list management company used by many, many different magazines. I wouldn't be surprised if many different magazines have similarly crappy security on their circulation file.
In any event, it's totally unacceptable and I'm encouraged by the fact that the president of our company has told them so. I would imagine that, for Macworld subscribers, customer service will become a bit more harder to access -- but the security of their personal information will be dramatically increased as well.

What I'd /really/ like to know is whether IDG uses this same application code for /all/ their magazine's circulation databases? I get a lot of trade magazines that have IDG logos somewhere on them, and I wonder whether or not they all have the same exposure.
Mind you, I dont blame IDG for anything here, but it would be nice to see if they can use this opportunity to fix what could be a broader problem. -- I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend your right to encrypt it. |
