7 new MPAA lawsuits: Isohunt, Torrentspy -- and newsgroups
Snip from a press release issued today by the Motion Picture Association of America regarding seven lawsuits filed today against filesharing service providers -- and newsgroups believed to be hubs for fileswapping activity:

Today’s lawsuits mark the first time the MPAA is taking action against sites that enable users of Newsgroups to easily find and download illegal content. Newsgroups are electronic bulletin boards which in recent years have become a major source of pirated content as users are able to attach movie, music and games files to their messages. The following is a list of the sites being sued by the MPAA and its member companies.

Isohunt.com, BTHub.com and TorrentBox.com: These related Torrent sites facilitate downloads of over 140,000 content items, including popular movies and television shows such as Wedding Crashers, Lost and Desperate Housewives.

TorrentSpy.com is the world’s most-visited site for obtaining infringing content using Torrent software. The site offers over 160,000 content items including 27,182 movies, 21,130 TV shows and over 45,000 music items.

NiteShadow.com has over 24,000 registered members and offers over 1,000 science-fiction TV and movie content including Battlestar Galactica, Quantum Leap, Sliders, Stargate, Babylon 5 and multiple Star Trek series.

eDonkey: Ed2k-It.com is a leading eDonkey site, with over 46,000 registered site members. eDonkey sites provide easy one-click access to specific content items on their peer-to-peer network.

Newsgroups: NZB-Zone.com, BinNews.com and DVDRs.net are membership-based websites that enable users of Newsgroups to initiate easy downloads of infringing content. NZB-Zone offers over 3.3 million files, including Star Wars Episode III, Wedding Crashers, Chronicles of Narnia, 40 Year-Old Virgin and King Kong; BinNews.com offers files for over 3,000 movies; and DVDRs.net has over 37,000 members.

I think they mean »www.nzbzone.com, not www.nzb-zone.com.

Personally, i find this whole situation kind of stupid. If they're going to sue sites that host NZB files just because it allows users to "initiate easy downloads of infringing content", then they should also sue gun shops because they allow some people to buy guns easily to shoot other people with.

None of the NZB sites mentioned have commented about these lawsuit claims yet.

edit: The NZB sites aren't even hosting any warez, it's the various news servers around the world that are .

@rr.com

Doesn't someone here at dslreports have their own tv show nzb website they host?

I am thinking the same thing your saying. It is stupid though I don't care. If they take down newzbin.com its not the end.

I used headers for a long time in the beginning and can do it again!

I think you're referring to AbBaZaBbA See Profile and TVNZB.com.

I would miss Newzbin.com .

Yes thats the person.

I would miss newzbin.com too sure but I don't need it to beable to use newsgroups. Though its nice.

There is always newsleecher and supersearch. Not sure if they could go after this. Just that supersearch is a little expensive I think.

All those NZB servers were in the States...wonder if it's time to start offshoring NZB sites?

funny how some of the site owners haven't even gotten a formal notice yet.
“Funny, they didn't email me,” Gary from ISOHunt said. “I'm not too concerned because we deal with copyright requests everyday, some of them from studios MPAA represents.”

“Justin” from TorrentSpy echoed Gary’s skepticism. “I guess I will learn more when I see what they have filed exactly. [I’m] not sure why they are suing when we comply with DMCA requests but I guess we will learn more down the road.”

Yes but could they start going after nzb sites that are overseas like newzbin somehow sooner or later?

I know they can kill the usenet backbone.

Going after nzb sites seems pointless. Nzb's are not an integral part of downloading from usenet, merely a convenience. They are spinning their wheels and just trying to flex their muscle. In the end it accomplishes nothing but getting some press.

(Edit: spelling)

My last post at the bottom of it was suppose to say:

I know they can't kill the usenet backbone.

i think it is very interesting that they would target binnews.com. my curiosity is piqued.

for those that do not know it. binnews.com is the very first usenet indexing site. it was binnews going to a subscription site where people would have to pay to see the indexing that motivated the Creation of binnewz.net founded on the principal of free usenet indexing. after one year of operation, and under constant harassment by usenet posters wanting to 'hide' activity from outside eyes binnewz.net shut down and some of the people from binnewz.net started newzbin.com, who charge for premium access to the site.

kind of ironic circle, huh?

anyway the point is binnews.com is the founding father of usenet indexing. they have been charging people for this service for a number of years and i would be inclined to say by now they probably have some pretty deep coffers.

i wonder if the MPAA even knows they are about to take on an old pro with a bankroll and not some under financed kid who is going to have to beg for money on the internet to defend himself.

it will be very interesting to see where this goes.

peace,
dumwaldo

I'm interested to see how this is going to play out. The newsgroups part is going to stir up a lot of controversy

here's how it's playing out so far... not taking any chances. Just not worth it for me personally.

Way to go AbBazaBba, cave to the RIAA before you even get a threat or know if the story is true. Its people like you that are making the RIAA's fight to rid the world of pirates, fair-use, and free speech so much easier! If more folks had the strenght and conviction you do, then the world would be a much better place, happily goose-stepping along to the Corporations tune(which is heavily protected with DRM).
