SF/Oak Bay Area Comcast - Worst Service Ever

Honestly, during "peak hours" (read: 7 pm to midnight or later) my ping avg. to yahoo.com (and comcast.net) is 300-500ms (non-peak, 30 ms avg)

This destroys any chance for gaming, but as my call to tech support last night indicated, comcast doesn't know or care about this problem at all.

If SBC wasn't so bad up here, I would have switched months ago. If you game, don't pay these fools a dime. They are the most worthless ISP I've ever been with.

I'm Having the SAME EXACT PROBLEM as well. thing is it just recently started doing this. past couple weeks have been really bad in the bay area. anybody know what the deal is? my ping increases substantially during peak hours (between 8:30PM - 12 AM).

its starting to really piss me off.

To all,

Our network support team is aware of some capacity issues in the West Bay area of CA that is affecting some connections - especially during the peak hours of the evening. These teams are working to add additional capacity as quickly as possible. We don't have an exact date for when this work will be completed but we are working as fast as possible to get this issue resolved. As soon as we get any new information on this issue, we will post an update for you.

The areas that are being affected by this are as follows:

Half Moon Bay
El Granada
Montera
Moss Beach
Princeton
Miramar

Please let us know if you have any questions.

It's actually been like this for longer than just a few weeks, though it has been substantially crappier lately. I sent a very unhappy email to them. Honestly, if SBC didn't suck up here, I would have jumped ship a long time ago. This is a tremendous waste of money if my peak hours (which conveniently is usually the only time I'm using the internet at my home) are my worst.

It isn't just the west bay since I'm having the same problem in Santa Clara. I've had this service for about 8 months now and this is nothing new. Comcast oversells the area and latency shoots through the roof for a month or two, then either a bunch of people cancel or they slightly upgrade capacity to band-aid the problem for a month. Wash, rinse, repeat.

It's clear that Comcast isn't dealing with their customers in good faith in the bay area. I'm sure they'd rather lose people like us that actually care about the quality of our connections than to anticipate capacity needs and upgrade beforehand. If they want to save money, they should stop advertising because they clearly can't handle any more customers.

im new and all but i purchased comcast hsi only because i play counter-strike and i need a fast connection. but the past few months, my HSI has been really lagging. Now, at least 2-6 times a day, my HSI would lag really bad and its really inconvenient. I usually get a ping of 20-50 in a server but now i would spike up to +150 ping sometimes (i thikn it might be network over-usage). i really need to fix this because i play in matches for www.caleague.com and i cant really play in matches when i lag really bad..so it screws me and my team over. i've tried calling comcast support and they didn't really do anything about it..so is there anything that i can do? or i might just cancel my service..

i know this has probably been mentioned before. but this is so fustrating. i emailed and called comcast and the only responses i get is to power cycle, low ram, etc. Power cycle doesnt even help and i'm 100% positive that this substantial lag that occurs 2-5 during the day has nothing to do with my computer. (i've even tried reformatting) they need to fix this ASAP because it's getting really tiring and annoying. im paying around $50.00 for Cable HSI that is as fast as 56k. i might just switch to DSL next month if this isnt fixed soon.

My pings go up to about ~160 during peak hours, still mostly playable in online games. My friend down near Santa Cruz, also on Comcast, has pings that shoot up in the 500’s during peak hours.

Thank you for your message concerning the Comcast High-Speed Internet service.

We are currently experiencing an outage in your area concerning intermittent connection and slow speeds.

We apologize for this inconvenience and are working toward a resolution as quickly as we can.

We hope to have the service restored shortly but do not have an estimate as to when this will occur.

We thank you for your patience as we investigate the source of the outage and make the necessary repairs to the network.

In response to:
Your service during the last few months from about 7 pm until midnight
has been terrible. This is hopefully another email from a frustrated
customer pointing to the egregious latency problems (such as avg. ping
ms to yahoo.com being 300-500 with samples of 100) your network has
been having. Yet your technical support does not desire to rectify
the problem - calls to support only suggest that the faulty node is at
the individual user's router or modem. But that is not the case, and
given the volume of emails like this you've undoubtedly received, I
recommend taking action if you want to maintain your customer base.
You will not survive to compete with other ISPs (hopefully some will
move up here, or is your plan to maintain monopolistic domination over
the area and ignore the cries of terrible service?).
I recommend passing this email to your manager, as I do not want a
canned email response explaining the uncertainty of the source of this
problem. The source is clear. The only question is whether steps
will be taken, or whether the loss of one direct (and many more
indirect, because this service has been outrageous to the point that
your reputation will suffer far greater losses from recommendations
against fellow bay area residents) customer will make a difference.
I certainly hope it will.

UPDATE: It's starting early. Tested about 2ish and was pinging 30ms avg to yahoo, and it's now up around 85ms (3:30 pm). Clearly this is based on overloaded circuits and usage times. I highly expect to get 300-500ms within the next couple hours.

It's been like this for months...occasionally okay, but usually terrible. Stormy day here in the Bay Area - was hoping to get in some online gaming. Of course with pings like these I'm getting booted from servers:

I'm a layman, but looking at my tracert, it sure looks like the entire ATT backbone is acting up. Comcast says there is a local bandwidth issue in the West SF Bay Area. I'm in the East Bay. They admitted I'm included. Why the heck do the Chicago and NY ATT hops lag so much? How on God's Green Earth do they expect to fix this?

Honestly..I RECOMMEND everyone using Comcast HSI and are experiencing bad service to cancel your service. Change to another isp like dsl.

I'm moving soon and as soon as I move, I will be switching ISPs from Comcrap to DSLX(DSL Extreme) and will be getting a 1500-6000/384-608 kbps subscription. I've heard some good things about DSLX so I will be trying them out. »www.dslextreme.com/
