Re: SF/Oak Bay Area Comcast - Worst Service Ever

Just checking in from San Francisco. I have noticed download speeds have dropped dramatically in the past month. When I was averaging 600k+ speeds when downloading files I have now dropped down to >100k speeds, sometimes as low as 30-40k.

I have also noticed ping times to servers that I regularly use jump pretty dramatically. What used to be 8-16ms pings are now 200-300ms pings during the evenings. Weekends are just as bad though.

I'll start tracking this stuff, as I just assumed it was something that was localized that would eventually clear up (and it wasn't affecting anything that was mission critical).

I don't know how many of you guys had cable back when ATTBI and excite@home were running the show, but things got a hundred times better when comcast came to town.

I've had comcast service in 4 cities in the bay, to date (Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Martinez) and in the last two years, it's been nigh flawless, with pings to yahoo.com making the trip in 16ms on average.

I can't speak for your home towns, but suffice it to say, you obviously aren't speaking for the whole of the bay.

i live in san jose. and haven't experienced any of this. my connection is fantastic. i would blame this on the storm and the recent outages.

I live in Vacaville as well, and this has been going on for a while now. Chatted with a Comcast tech last night, and they have been as helpless as usual. We know there's an outage, blah blah blah, and have no clue when it will be fixed. For the $56 a month I'm paying for the 5 Mbit connection I should be getting, this is pretty pathetic. I'm trying to get a credit for my service, and I know this has been going on since at least the end of last year. Oversubscription on the part of Comcast is getting out of hand. Enough people complain, then the SOP seems to be that they band aid a solution for a couple of weeks until the connection craps out again. What amazes me even more is that while this slowdown occurs almost every night, their network health page always reads "Healthy." What a joke....Judging from the number of posts on their forums that show transcripts of chat w/ their techs, all they know how to do is blame it on your modem, even when you have tracert proof that it points to the AT&T backbone.

@131.238.x.x

Im a tech support person in dayton ohio, and i am running the technology for a distance learning class where the professor is in the bay area. Every time we try to hold the class, the video feed goes down or freezes. I have done a traceroute and have never gotten a single packet to make the trip from here to there without a problem. First theres a slowdown in chicago, and then the packet times out in california, three or four hops away from his ISP.

UGH what a pain!
And i can see that it definately goes through a comcast server.....

I realize that it looks as the problem is alone with Comcast. If you loko at the network traces in the threads the latency problem is at the peer point with AT&T (owned by SBC)

If I were Comcast I would be slapping AT&T around to get the peer upgraded.
I expect you (Comcast) will have to take a number and wait in line. A bunch of us SBC customers are slapping SBC silly over speed problems. I would hope that we, who connect through SBC, would have higher priority about getting our speed fixed than you, who only have latency issues.

I live in Palo Alto, and my Comcast service have bee crappy lately as well. Makes gaming not fun. They charge big-time bucks for their service, they should provide low latency.

I’m glad that I found this thread, I have just moved into the Bay area from NJ and the fantastic OOL service and DTV. In the 6 years that I had OOL it went down twice for short periods of time and I never had a tech to the house. I have been here in Danville for two weeks and Comcast have been out here 7 times, we now have the TV working but the loss of speed at peak hours with the internet is driving me crazy. At first I thought it was just me but at least I now know. I can receive DSL here but it seems that is not a perfect service at the moment in this area, I would gladly take the drop in speed (kind of a silly statement when my evening speeds are the same as dial up) if I thought DSL would solve my problem. Do you guys think its worth getting a Comcast tech out to just document the issue and check my set up even through I know there is nothing wrong this end ?

Thanks in advance

Noddy, it would probably just be a waste of $50.00 to send the tech over there. It's not even worth it. So many customers are complaining and this has been going on for a long time..or at least its been going on for MONTHS now for me. I'm just tired of it so I'm changing ISPs.

OK Ya'll this is my first time with Comcast high speed, I tried only one other Cable high speed and that was Adelphia high speed. I left my very dependable, consist ant speed, consist ant ping, DSL provider surfcity.net, to try Adelphia at their low promotion rate of $19.95 per mo. for six mo. It was slower than my 56K fax modem. And that, was also was consist ant. That lasted 2 months and I went begging surfcity.net to take me back and for the next 4 years with them I was only down once. Then I had to move to northern CA. And...........STUPID me, what do I do. WOW 8 meg download/ 780 upload at a promotional price, like any other guppy I swallow the hook and leave DSL once more for Comcast. I spoke with surfcity.net just today in fact, and they will let me know if, and when, they can hook me back up from here in Vacaville. On the day that happens will also be the day comcast gets their modem back. Now the QUESTION.............Why? do we (as a group of like minded people with a common need)let these big companies yank our chains anytime they please and give us nothing in return. I figure from browsing the posts that, their must be a bare min. of lets say 1000,000 of us. We pay them an avg. of $45.00 per mo. that's Four and a half million dollars a month. If we could organize and boycott their service till we get what they say their selling. I guess it would get fixed damn quick. Or am I way off base here?

Well..I'm changing to DSLX www.dslextreme.com
If you might change to them..you should check with them first to see if they are able to service you through their online chat support.

Part of the reason I started this thread was to centralize at least one group of people all suffering from the same poor service. I was well aware I wasn't alone with this headache. Yet the reality is it takes a mob to get things done. Most of us have called, emailed, etc and gotten nothing useful in response. Maybe united we can achieve more.

Also, I don't think it's just the storms, since this has been going on for a couple months at least, which further amazes me that comcast has said nothing about it anywhere. Back when I used TW:RR in SoCal their network status page was typically much more reflective of what the "actual" network status was. Apparently comcast doesn't follow the same protocol...

its getting worse again

theres only one way i can explain my frustration, and that would be the ending of Episode III of Star Wars, when Darth Vader finds out Queen Amidala is dead

Darth Vader: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

look at the tracert as well as a little surprise included in pic.

This isn't just a Bay Area thing. Comcast is a horrid company. I had Comcast when I lived in Maryland and the service was just as awful.

The first disgusting thing about company is the fact that they push their bundle of services on you. I had a deal where cable + tv was $40 a month for the first 3 months. The television service was down so much that I had a technician over at least 4 times. When I say down I don't mean poor quality, or a few channels not working, I mean I would see nothing but channel listings and NO picture and NO sound. It would be down like this for days at a time. Eventually I got so fed up that I demanded a refund for the lost tv service that I was paying for. Comcast was more than happy to oblige...on my next bill I received a credit for a whopping $1.08!! This in now way shape or form covered my days of lost of service (not to mention the hours I spent on hold, talking to the idiots from customer service, or waiting for the cable guy).

Rightly outraged, I demanded to cancel the tv component of my package. I was told that by doing so my monthly bill would GO UP to $50+ a month!! Since I was only in MD for a few more weeks, it didn't make sense and I ended up keeping my plan and paying $40 a month for in essence just broadband service.

The broadband was mostly great...unless you were connecting in the evenings 8-10 PM when it was usually unusable. I'm not a gamer so I couldn't tell you about the latency, but if you tried to surf the web at this time it would be painful. Pages would time out left and right. And if you wanted to read a news site you would have to repeatedly hit refresh. Unlike the TV service though, the broadband didn't have a period of completely going out. There were times when it was slow, but never 100% out. I never bothered complaining about this as I was sick of Comcast by this point.

By far the worst scam these guys have is with billing after you cancel your service. I cancelled my service after my 3 month period was up, and I returned all my equipment. I physically went to there office and waited on line. Once my turn came, I handed in all of my equipment, and paid off the remainder of my balance. I received a receipt saying I owed $0 and moved back to NY, glad to getting the hell away from Comcast. Flashforward 3 months later and I get a bill from a collection agency saying I owe Comcast other $40+!!! I called up Comcast and they told me that even though I had returned my equipment, I still owed them for another 2 weeks of service and that it "costs them to send service" to my apartment. I didn't even live there anymore and I wasn't even under contract.

I know this post is long winded and mostly off-topic, but Comcast is pure swine. I wouldn't wish working with these morons to my worst enemy.

And everyone, repeat after me: Class action. Class action. The only way these people will stop screwing us is we hit them in their pocketbooks.

This problem started well before the recent storm. See the start-date for the thread. And for me, it started a week or two before the thread.

Woot!! Tuesday night, several pings in my tracert under 300 ms!! (yes, being sarcastic):
