| [General] VoIP thru out the house
I am thinking about finally moving from expensive Verizon landline service to Vonage VoIP. I know there are better, cheaper providers out but I live with my parents and I want a provider that will be around. And for my parents it is all about brand name.
But before I sign up I wanted to check how I could make Voip run throughout my whole house. I have read that if I disconnect telecom line to my house and hook up the Vonage gear to one of my jacks that it will run throughout my house. However all the sites that tell you how to do this have the newer Cat3 or Cat5 systems, but my house is really old 1940's and the line running to my house is uncovered and it is a real mess. I have two, two pair lines running from the pole and I have the white, green lines from my house connected to those. And I was wondering if I removed the telecom lines and hooked vonage to a jack if it would work. Also is my house to old for this? I heard that the lines need to be in parallel for it to work and I don't know if my house is like that.
One more thing, is there any website that can give me step by step instructions and pictures. This is my parents house and I don't want to mess anything up. |

| The wiring pictured is similar but not exact to my house. |
My house is wired like the image above, and the Michigan website mentioned, says that the instructions really don't apply to houses wired like those in the picture. Now is it just a disclaimer and it is the same process or do I have to do something different? |

| reply to ashakouri1 If you have an old-style lightning protector, you may be able to undo the nuts just enough to remove the wires. Only remove the wires coming from inside the house, but leave the telephone company wires connected, and the leave the ground wire(s) on the center nut connected, to help protect your home from lightning damage - re-tighten the nuts after you've disconnected the inside wires. But if there is more than one wire coming from inside your home connected to each connection, you should use the gel-filled communications connectors to maintain the connections between the inside wires (in other words, all the wires that were under the same nut EXCEPT the one coming from the telephone company's drop wire should be connected together).
It's a bit hard to explain, and a lot of people cannot even correctly identify the lightning protector on (or in) their home, so that's why I don't really try to cover this on the page. But since you asked, I thought I'd try to clarify a bit. Also, in this situation it is IMPERATIVE to test your inside line before you connect your VoIP adapter, to make sure you disconnected the wires correctly and don't have any stray voltage or anything like that on your inside wiring. |

| I am going to do it tomorrow. Last question is, with these old style wirings, will I have to worry about being electrocuted or anything like that? Should I not touch any of the telco wires, because they are opened and the wires are not covered at the ends. |

| I will be putting this Warning(I have cut it out, put 1 back to back with another and then laminated them) on the outside equipment, just in-case some tries to reconnect the outside wiring, maybe they will think twice first? Hopefully!
