Westell 6100 DSL/Router Firewall Questions ?

Hi all,the above listed router was provided by Verizon for my DSL connection. Verizon has absolutely No information posted on the internal 610015-06 firewall. Tech support was useless and would not even admit the existence of a firewall internal to the DSL router. Westell sends me a form letter saying service or info on this router is exclusively provided by Verizon. Where can I get information on using the custom rules for this firewall ie., incoming vs. outgoing rules which ones do I create first ? Are there any Global rules criteria ?
Note, Verizon sends the DSL/Router with the Firewall in the Off position.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Amy, thanks for the link. Duh, I should have posted there but, missed it. I had looked at that section of the forum earlier. Most of the info there applies to the A90 or B90 series Westell 6100's. I have one of the newest ie., the C90-610015-06 models. As far as I know there is No User Guide and/or software downloads ie., new drivers, diagnostics etc. for this model. I am Not sure what info is applicable to my unit. Thanks for the heads up and I will post in the right section of the Forum. Thanks again.

not surprised the verizon tech support agent was useless.. I was one...

Log into the Westell. If you used the Verizon install CD, the username and password for the modem/router will be your verizon username and password. If that does not work try admin/admin or admin/password.

Now I'm assuming that since you're savvy enough to find DSLR and even ask about it in the first place, you'll find the Westell's web interface intuitive. The settings you're looking for should be under Configuration (mouse over it, a menu will drop down) or Maintanence, though most likely Configuration.

Of course, even with the firewall "off" the modem still acts like your typical NAT router, dropping unsolicited inbound connections. I've never had an opportunity to experiment with the firewall in any other setting so can't tell you what it can/can't do, but once you're in there it should be pretty obvious anyway.

Hi sirvan, Thanks for the reply. I have been to the Westell site(my DSL/Router), logged in and checked out the firewall settings. As you said, default is Off and you still have the NAT. Your options on the Firewall are Low (only known security holes protected). Normally I would say OK here but, and there always seems to be a but, in the Low position I have a problem. I use Outpost Pro as a firewall and have it pretty tight ie., Stealth across the board at several "testing sites". With the Westell firewall in Low, two obvious things happen; I have some HTTPS and FTP traffic Blocked or I get a slew of pop ups from Outpost. Medium is the same as Low except user can set custom rules thru the NAT configuration. I may end up here if I can get it working with one PC attached. Next step is hooking up my LinkSys and going into Bridge mode and then installing a Win2K and a WinXP PC ie., the rest of my network. I haven't thought much about the High setting ie., everything Blocked except for Web,News,Mail,FTP and IPSEC. Regarding these settings, it sure would be nice if instead of generalized headers describing what the Firewall Blocks or Allows, I had a list of ports, protocols and directions. Not to mention rule priority and Global Rule information, if applicable. Lastly there is a Custom setting. That is my target area if I had the list I mentioned. I know enough about firewall rules that I can use my rules in Outpost Pro and change the syntax to apply to the Westell. To reiterate slghtly, first step is to learn enough about the Westell firewall to get it working with one PC and then with a router and three PC's. After that it is going to get real confusing as I want to plug both the Westell DSL/Router and either a Wild Blue satellite modem or a Waverider 900 Mhz wireless radio into a Smart WAN. The Smart WAN goes to the LinkSys and the three PC's from there.
I have experience both with the Waverider radio and A Starband satellite modem (the 360).
Bottom line; I can prod my way thru settings for configuring the Westell with just the one PC to "Learn" about it. I have the time and patience to do so. Then having done that, go from there. I have already done a double NAT with the Westell and the LinkSys but, with the Westell firewall in the Off position. It sure would be "nice" to have a User Guide with Custom Firewall configuration guidelines. I have the time and the knowledge but, I don't want to have to reinvent the wheel so to speak. It sure looks like the information I want is made out of "Non-Obtanium". I can understand Verizon wanting to stay away from network technical support but, I would have to believe that Westell has tech info that would be helpful.
Again, thanks for your reply and when I get my network configured with the Westell Firewall ON and my Security and Traffic how I want it, I will post the results.

I too have a Westell 6100 C90-610015-06. I found the documentation you are searching for at www.westell.com/content/sales/liteline.pdf. The manual has the firewall information you are looking for I believe. Download it and check it out. Hope this is what you want.

I had the same problem and this is how I managed to fix it. in case you don't know how to reach the configuration page, type »192.168.1.1 into ur internet browser. if that is your first time the name will be admin and the password will be password, or you could try ur user name and password that u used to set up your dsl account. After I signed on I went to maintenance to restore the default factory settings. After a couple of minutes I had to reactivate my dsl account. Sign back on to the configuration page, the name and password will be the same before you changed it, go to configuration and click on service configuration. Click on static nat and your computer name should be displayed next to static nat device. click on enabled and this should fix your nat problems.
