Re: [modem/router] Verizon Westell 6100 won't work with Netgear

Did you clone the MAC address from the 6100 into the Netgear, as per those instructions?

On the WGR614 that option is only available when you connect without a login. I believe that once my 6100 is in bridge mode, the DSL login will have to come from the Netgear router. I this correct?

I'll fuss with the Netgear Router and see if I can get it to take the MAC address in login mode.

With respect to login, you are correct - it will be something like [username]@verizon.net and a password. I just configured a Westell 6100 as a bridge to work with a D-Link 524 router. At first it was slow to work, but after two mins, it kicked in.

Also change the IP of the Netgear to 192.168.2.1 (EDIT to reflect this necessary change).

I got it to take the MAC address but still no joy.

The username in the 6100 login doesn't have the "@verizon.net" part, so I left that out of the Netgear Login field.

Still banging head against wall......

Both modem and router have the same IP address by default. (192.168.1.1)

I changed the modem to 192.168.2.1 to see if that will help.

Hi again:

I think you need the verizon.net in the username - I had to place it there to get my DI-524 to work via PPPoE. Also, just be absolutely sure about the password and that the 6100 modem is indeed in bridge mode. Have you seen this:

»Verizon Online DSL FAQ »How do I use a router with the Westell 6100?

Also, you just mentioned changing the octet from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1 - that is also important.

You don't log in. Set your router to normal or acquire an Ip automatically, or whatever it calls DHCP.

It depends on whether he is in ex-GTE or PPPoE areas - I am not sure about MI personally, but here on the east coast we are PPPoE.

We're PPPoE here. At least that is what works in the 6100.

The Account ID on the 6100 is a simple 8 character ID without the "verizon.net" Why would it be different in the Netgear router?

Once I change the IP address in the 6100, I can no longer access it in any way shape or form. No ping, NADA... I had to reset it to regain access. Perhaps I need to change the IP address of the Netgear router instead?? Should it be set to 192.168.2.1 ???

Try the following:

1) Make sure that the Westell 6100 is indeed set to bridge mode »Verizon Online DSL FAQ »How do I use a router with the Westell 6100? - BE ABSOLUTELY sure you have read this FAQ thoroughly

2) Connect your PC directly to the Netgear and go to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 (whichever works) - if 1.1 works, you want to change it to 2.1

3) Enter the full username (regardless of what you see in the 6100) with the "@verizon.net" - even if the Westell 6100 didn't have it (I've always seen it with the verizon.net), using another router for PPPoE may require it. Did you happen to run the Verizon DSL CD? It may have reset the 6100 modem to a default setting....

4) Don't bother with MAC cloning - Verizon DSL doesn't use that nor requires it AFAIK

5) Remove the VOIP for now - you may have to reconfigure that later since you have changed the netgear to 192.168.2.1 and I presume the VOIP will be plugged into the Netgear

This procedure worked for me when I had to configure a 6100 with a D-Link 524 router.

Finally its working.

Removing the Lingo adapter was what solved the problem. The Lingo adapter was between the modem and the router, (where it was recommended to be), but it blocked any traffic going from the router to the modem. I put it on an outbound Netgear router port and it's working fine there.

Shouldn't I still be able to access the Westell modem at its IP address (192.168.1.1)? I set the DHCP server so all my computers now have IP addresses of 192.168.2.x Pinging 192.168.1.1 gives some wierd info now almost like it has to reach the modem via China.... and I can't enter that address in a browser window to bring up the 6100 config pages.

thanks for the ideas...

Good to hear....the only way to access the 6100 is to directly connect to it, then go to 192.168.1.1 - otherwise, you can't reach it AFAIK.

I'm still trying to figure out where my IP addresses in the range of 172.25.25.x were coming from back when the 6100 was supposed to be dishing them out. It wasn't what I had setup in the 6100 DHCP address ranges. They were all 192.168.1.x addresses.

Since 172.xx IP's are private, they are similar in nature to 192.xx - nothing to be concerned about, its just how Verizon probably set up the modem initially. This is normal, because the Westell 6100 modem is a basic modem:

»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »Westell 6100 Specific Information

For future reference:
»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »What is the proper way to set up a Netgear router with a Westell modem?

Private IP Address ranges are:
10.x.x.x
172.x.x.x
192.168.x.x
