| reply to sivran Hi sirvan, Thanks for the reply. I have been to the Westell site(my DSL/Router), logged in and checked out the firewall settings. As you said, default is Off and you still have the NAT. Your options on the Firewall are Low (only known security holes protected). Normally I would say OK here but, and there always seems to be a but, in the Low position I have a problem. I use Outpost Pro as a firewall and have it pretty tight ie., Stealth across the board at several "testing sites". With the Westell firewall in Low, two obvious things happen; I have some HTTPS and FTP traffic Blocked or I get a slew of pop ups from Outpost. Medium is the same as Low except user can set custom rules thru the NAT configuration. I may end up here if I can get it working with one PC attached. Next step is hooking up my LinkSys and going into Bridge mode and then installing a Win2K and a WinXP PC ie., the rest of my network. I haven't thought much about the High setting ie., everything Blocked except for Web,News,Mail,FTP and IPSEC. Regarding these settings, it sure would be nice if instead of generalized headers describing what the Firewall Blocks or Allows, I had a list of ports, protocols and directions. Not to mention rule priority and Global Rule information, if applicable. Lastly there is a Custom setting. That is my target area if I had the list I mentioned. I know enough about firewall rules that I can use my rules in Outpost Pro and change the syntax to apply to the Westell. To reiterate slghtly, first step is to learn enough about the Westell firewall to get it working with one PC and then with a router and three PC's. After that it is going to get real confusing as I want to plug both the Westell DSL/Router and either a Wild Blue satellite modem or a Waverider 900 Mhz wireless radio into a Smart WAN. The Smart WAN goes to the LinkSys and the three PC's from there. I have experience both with the Waverider radio and A Starband satellite modem (the 360). Bottom line; I can prod my way thru settings for configuring the Westell with just the one PC to "Learn" about it. I have the time and patience to do so. Then having done that, go from there. I have already done a double NAT with the Westell and the LinkSys but, with the Westell firewall in the Off position. It sure would be "nice" to have a User Guide with Custom Firewall configuration guidelines. I have the time and the knowledge but, I don't want to have to reinvent the wheel so to speak. It sure looks like the information I want is made out of "Non-Obtanium". I can understand Verizon wanting to stay away from network technical support but, I would have to believe that Westell has tech info that would be helpful. Again, thanks for your reply and when I get my network configured with the Westell Firewall ON and my Security and Traffic how I want it, I will post the results. |
