so not only is the U.S. installing at a much lower rate, the stuff they are installing is already "old technology".

No wonder the U.S. is 16th and falling.

BPON is easily upgraded to GPON or GEPON so its really not a big deal. The US does not need those higher speeds produced by GPON or GEPON at this time (BPON speeds theoretically max out at 600 mgbits while GPON is well over a GIG) but when the time is right the upgrades will be swift. To deploy the big guns now would be a waste of resources, progression is the key in buisnesses of all natures.

Actually, Verizon installed about the same amount of fiber in 2005 as the entire country of Japan.
