that would be literally impossible. you would need to connect an outlet to a modem. you would need 2 outlets to connect 2 modems.

Two modems cannot communicate with the same node on the same wire at the same time, or so I've been led to believe.

Of course they can, while actually they can't but the Time divisions, hence A-TDMA(advanced time division muliple access technology), allows several modems to communicate simultaneoulsy on the same wire and the same RF channel...or so it seems.

Hundreds of modems communicate on the same distribution line all the time, if they couldn't there would have to be a different coax line for every single house to the node!! The only differene between the coax cable in your house and the distribution cable is size, that's it.
As to the original question, the only thing you have to be concerned about is the amount of signal available at that one particular outlet. Remember when you split it your essentially cutting the signal by 3.5 db and you generally don't want much less than 0db hitting a modem or you could start running into issues.

Thanks guys, Yeah about 4 Tech support guys from shaw Convinced me not to, because they were to lazy to set up a second account. I called in and eventually got a cool tech who would listen

This is %100 possible. As long as the RF is good enough you can run a ton of modems.

Right.

Maybe there is a reason they told you that. If you're wanting to run 2 modems and pay for 2 internet accounts, then good for you. If you're needing it for 2 computers and you're ok with buying and running a router, then good for you.

Chances are, the first 4 guys were trying to help save you money, and the fifth wanted the commission for selling you a second internet account, if that is what you did.

Too lazy? Possible, but it takes 2 to 3 minutes to create the work order, get the modem serial, and post the work order off. Not too hard.

You be the judge.

That picture actually came from a local lan we put in Calgary,Alberta called Lanageddon. So yes it is possible as the previous users posted above. The box pictured there was running linux at the time, but we currently use an openbsd box now that works much better. The connection works great and is very fast. I will post a picture of the current setup once we finish the event(which is running right now).

You know there's only 38Mbit available in total to all of those modems and that's the total downstream available to the entire node, right?

You have a few people who are attending the LAN bring their modems I presume?

Shaw are running multiple downstreams on each node now?

This would make nodes very asymettrical however it would explain the throttling on upstream traffic to an extent, throwing 76Mbps or more at a node downstream and only 20Mbps upstream while offering 7/1 or so will make ya do that...

Anyone who can show the multi-downstreams to be the case please do, I'm interested, especially as it's the only way to get over 38Mbps down each node.

EDIT: Unless you're in PAL land in which case we can stuff 51Mbps per downstream down a node. Have to love EuroDOCSIS.

EDIT2: Come on dude you post just one word 'wrong!' and don't explain why and you've been posting since this post was made so you've probably read it, educate me

That doesn't sound anything like the docsis network I work with everyday.

As far as I know no cableco in Canada runs multiple downstreams to each node. As I said though I'm more than open to be corrected by someone who knows the facts such as your good self.

Why would you even need fast internet at a LAN party?
It's all internal network, no need for 11 modems.

I maxed out at ~30 Mbit/s on a Shaw DOCSIS 1.1 node.
