Re: 2 Shaw Docsis Modems on 1 cable outlet

Well from what i gather 1 modem could be setup to do it, its more for wow factor having 11 modems than anything. It actually works out well with all the modems as we can tcp stream balance the load across the modems. I dont have traffic graphs in front of me but the bottom end of the graph is in the 2000-2500kb/s range with the peak around 8000 kb/s

Still trying to get a hold of a picture, once i get one i will post it.

This setup from SHAW is not normal. It is setup specifically for our event. I cant go into any details but we have alot more than 30mb bandwidth available.

And you would be surprised how many poeple at a large lan want net access. With games like WOW ect around i dont think you will find many lans that run without it.
Nice set up if you can get it, weird one too though if they set the network up specifically to give you guys more bandwidth but require you to have 11 cable modems.

No need to go into huge detail with it it's fairly self evident how they're doing it, options are a bit limited how to do it

Feel privileged though there's a fair bit of equipment supplying your bandwidth

I see that this has turned into a pissing contest. I have better things to do with my time. Have a nice day.
A simple 'ooops I was wrong' would have sufficed rather than getting indignant

You posted what you believed to be the facts, someone else posted what they actually were, it happens.

Any pissing contest arose from your providing technical explanation of what you considered to be these facts, and a technical argument is best countered with another one.

I'll make a mental note to stay quiet whenever you post if being disagreed with on a discussion forum is that offensive to you.

Come on you gotta spill the beans. We want details. Get us pictures from this years LAN Party. Is it wireless or mostly wired (I assume wired for low latency).

Let me get this straight - a node with 1,000+ customers on it only has a max downstream of 30mbps-38mbps? and 30mbps up-stream? Geez that's serious over-selling and 5 people downloading at max speed would kill the node. Please tell me this isn't correct.
Oh it be so sir, and they are quite unlikely to have 30Mbps of upstream available

1,000+ customer nodes are unlikely I hope, usual builds now use far smaller homes passed per node. More recent UK overbuilds have been 250 - 350 homes passed per node.

Think about it this way the MSOs offering 15Mbit it only takes 2 people doing full speed and one doing half to max it

As far as I know no cableco in Canada runs multiple downstreams to each node. As I said though I'm more than open to be corrected by someone who knows the facts such as your good self.
I maxed out at ~30 Mbit/s on a Shaw DOCSIS 1.1 node.
The rest of the population of the node were probably using the other 8Mbit.

EuroDOCSIS is based on a 8MHz RF channel hence it's greater downstream capacity. As far as my statement regarding your assessment of a 38Mbps maximum-I'll stand by it. Your assumption of my comment was that there was more available when in fact there is less. Most cable companies while using DOCSIS 2.0 compliant modems are still running a DOCSIS 1.0/1.1 network. Maximum downstream bandwidth in 90% of the nodes would be 27Mbps/30Mbps. Only on a DOCSIS 2.0 platform will you attain 38 Mbps. Hope that clarifies my earlier response and my apologies for the terse post. I can be quite long winded when minus 3 children on my lap.
No sir you are wrong, 256QAM downstreams that deliver 38Mbps have been available and a required part of equipment conforming to the standard from DOCSIS 1.0, DOCSIS 2.0 gives enchancements to upstream bandwidths, not down.

Your belief that DOCSIS 1.1 gives more downstream bandwidth than DOCSIS 1.0 is also incorrect. The main differences between them are security (baseline privacy plus), the *requirement* to support 16QAM upstreams and dynamic service flow addition / modification / deletion and QoS for Packetcable-like services.

Why would you even need fast internet at a LAN party?
It's all internal network, no need for 11 modems.

Shaw are running multiple downstreams on each node now?

This would make nodes very asymettrical however it would explain the throttling on upstream traffic to an extent, throwing 76Mbps or more at a node downstream and only 20Mbps upstream while offering 7/1 or so will make ya do that...

Anyone who can show the multi-downstreams to be the case please do, I'm interested, especially as it's the only way to get over 38Mbps down each node.

EDIT: Unless you're in PAL land in which case we can stuff 51Mbps per downstream down a node. Have to love EuroDOCSIS.

EDIT2: Come on dude you post just one word 'wrong!' and don't explain why and you've been posting since this post was made so you've probably read it, educate me

You know there's only 38Mbit available in total to all of those modems and that's the total downstream available to the entire node, right?

Wrong!

You have a few people who are attending the LAN bring their modems I presume?
