| Motorola Cable modem with Linksys router: Conflict?
I am using a Linksys WRT54G router with a motorola cable modem (serial number not important)
The thing is the modem is a router in itself and comes with the option to allow it to be a DHCP server.
My question is therefore, does this combination cause any conflicts? (Both having DHCP capabilities) The linksys router is doing all the work, splitting the connection between 3 computers...
Will turning the DHCP option off in the modem settings disconnect the linksys router?
Any help is appreciated |

The Moto modem's DHCP server doesn't issue IP addresses once it's online. (and any that it might have already issued quickly expire)
Set your Linksys router to function as your LANs DHCP server, and to obtain it's public WAN IP address "automatically" from your ISP (unless your particular ISP requires something different); it'll work just fine w/o any conflicts.
The following explanation is excerpted is from the Moto SB5101 overview manual: quote: The SB5100 family of modems contain an internal DHCP server, which is active until the modem registers with the CMTS. In the case of a problem that prevents the modem from completing its registration, the modem can still give an IP address to the client PC [or router] to enable diagnostics access.
This address is given with a very short lease (around 10 seconds) so that as soon as the registration does complete the client PC [or router] obtains its proper [public] IP address from the core network [ISP] DHCP server.
