| [Line Problem] New EL DSL account wont work
I just set up a new account with Earthlink. They said everything should have started working yesterday. All the lights on my Zyxel 660r-elnk are on. I have a power light (green), a ethernet light (amber for 100 mb), I have a dsl light, always green and an internet light (most all of the time green with intermittent flashes).
I have tried doing a diagnostic and the modem passes. I have made sure I can accept a DHCP connection and I can. I just dont understand what the problem is. If the net light is green, then I should be getting a good signal right? Tech support through dsl has so far been no help. Any ideas? |

| Did you setup your PC to only use a LAN connection?

What error do you get from a browser?
Can you ping www.dslreports.com ?
Can you ping the DSL Reports IP? 209.123.109.175
Can you reach www.dslreports.com by name or by IP? http://209.123.109.175
Does the modem show that you have a current IP? What IP does your PC show?

| Heres the answer to your questions.
Ping request could not find host www.dslreports.com Please check the name...
however when I ping the 209.123.109.175 and it does ping.!!!
ping stats for 209.123.109.175: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost=0 Approx. round trip times in milleseconds: minimum=41ms, max=43ms, average = 42ms
when internet explorer opens www.dslreports.com it says the page cannot be displayed
the modem says my ip address is 192.168.1.33 but that cant be right can it?
209.123.109.175 did in fact load up a page... It did it slowly (much slower than dialup) I could also goto the links on the page (albeit slowly) what does this mean? www.Dslreports.com says the page "cannot be displayed"
It seems like I am not getting a strong enough signal for me to be able to actually open normal web pages, is this the case?
I feel like I am getting somewhere, thanks in advance for any further help or advice you can offer. |

| Your PC IP is correct as it is from the ZyXEL Router.
Make sure you do not have any Proxies configured.

Also make sure that there are no numbers manually added in the PC for DNS or Gateway as it should be pure DHCP.

| Man I am getting like 1k a second or so. I understand tweaking the connection but this is crazy. So do you think I need to have someone come out and look at my phone lines outside? I think SBC is the one who takes care of the lines around here. Would running a new line from the actual phone box help at all?

| What is your sync rate showing in the ZyXEL Router/Modem? Also what are your current line stats for DSL (Attentuation, Noise Margins, Capacity or Occupation and Sync Rates) for Downstream are the most important.
You may have to reset TCP/IP as it may be corrupted.

1 edit | After resetting the tcp/ip, something VERY strange happened. The dslreports page is lightning quick...quicker than any broadband I've ever used. I was able to goto any link on the site with very very fast results. However, if I try to goto another site, it still cannot find the page. Any idea what could have happened? At least 1 site works!
I am sounding like a dumb*ss on here but I am actually quite experienced with cable internet and their modems, I just have no idea what I'm doing with dsl. Sorry about my stupid questions. |

| Please delete all the Internet Explorer TIF (Temporary Internet Folder) files and repair IE.
Clear the Temporary Internet Files using the Windows XP Disk Cleanup utility »windowsxp.mvps.org/clearxptif.htm
Did you perform all the steps above I listed without skipping any? You may have leftover Cable settings interfering with the ADSL. No Proxies and No Gateways listed? What about your HOSTS file? Temporarily rename it to HOSTS.bak and create a new HOSTS file (no extension) with one line in it.
Your DR TCP settings should be set to 1492 for the MTU and 65535 for the RWIN.

Are you running any Software Firewall (even the XP one should be disabled/off)? If yes, temporarily disable it as the ZyXEL has a built in Firewall.
There should normally only be one LAN connection in your PC.

| I have indeed tried every single step you suggested. Unfortunately I lost even the use of your site using the connection. I assure you I wasn;t just bringing up old Temporary internet files when I was connected for a while. I was bringing up things I had never been to before on this site. I purposely clicked only on only different parts of the site because I wanted to make sure the system was really working. Before I was able to delete anything or do anything else on your post, I lost my connection again totally.
I tried the host file thing and unfortunately it did not helped. I also turned off every firewall. The only thing that I wanted to know is how to find information on the computer about the Zyxel modem. Earthlink didn't send me anything other than the cd that installs their software but it didnt install drivers to the modem or anything. I dont see a way of checking the modem specs or stats. It doesnt use a usb cable either so its not even found in my modem section on the control panel. Maybe this is why the whole system isn't working, who knows? It is getting fairly frustrating, I really do appreciate your help. |

Hi there Cody: In the above portion of the quote, can i get some clarification from you..are you saying here that when you typed the IP address of: 209.123.109.175 into the "address bar" of your browser[MS IE] you were then able to view broadbandreports web site?
If so, i would try the following:
Click on Start -> Control Panel -> Network connections -> Right click on your Local area connection, goto properties -> Click on Internet Protocol TCP/IP{do not remove the little check mark} -> Click on Properties -> Leave IP Section set to "Obtain IP address automatically" -> Change DNS from "obtain DNS automatically" to "Use the Following" and enter in the below values accordingly: ==== DNS (primary): 207.217.77.82 DNS (secondary): 207.217.120.83 ===== Click ok an then try to browse web sites again normally ===== -the pup |

| Your welcome cody,
While I worked for ELNK before they shipped my job over seas...I have seen this problem all too often..i normally see this problem over on the west coast, but i've noticed it more an more with mid-west users as well..for some reason the DNS isn't resolving automatically like it should...by simply hard coding Earthlink's DNS addresses..your PC won't have to obtain that info automatically everytime your try to browse web sites anymore and now your PC's response times should be pretty quick depending on net traffic to web sites. === DNS = Domain Name System..this is what translates IP addresses to the easy to remember web addresses..as using names for web sites is much, much easier than trying to remember IP addresses for your favorite web site. -- Ex-Earthlink Hi-speed Tech Support Rep. |

| It's possible the ZyXEL is not setup right as it should get DNS server info from the connection and when your PC gets an IP from the ZyXEL it should fill in the DNS fields. After setting your PC to DHCP, if you don't reboot or run "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew" in a Command Box, then the PC will have old stale info and not connect to the DNS servers.
You don't have to install any software from Earthlink to setup the ZyXEL.
