MIT's Site Advisor finds 5% of all websites unsafe

MIT's site advisor has slapped a red "X" on 5% of all web-
sites and has warned that there one billion monthly visits
to sites that aren't safe for surfing.
said by Eweek :
Web sites found hosting drive-by exploits,
bundling adware/spyware with downloads or hammering inboxes
with spam get the dreaded red warning "X."

That's been much discussed here:

I do wonder how large a hosts file incorporating their results might be.

It looks like hosts files and AV signature files will become more work to maintain and less and less useful as we see the number of malware/malsites increase.

Yes, it's a sign of the times, it's the wild west of exploits out there. And what Sir Raleigh said.

At the same time, this is another example where people will go to a greater amount of work to avoid a lesser amount of work. This vendor has coded a whole new service and started selling it, and people will buy it and get it set up, - all to help them avoid hazards that wouldn't even be significant hazards in the first place if they would just invest the minimal amount of effort to find out how to secure their computers.

I'm going to call this the hyena principle, after this classic snark: »www.maxpc.co.uk/tips/def ··· onid=551

I really like this siteadvisor tool. I think I would recommend it to all my constantly infested customers if I was still in the AV biz.

Hey Edelman

A few questions for your client/employer FAQ:
  1. How do I block SiteAdvisor from crawling my site?

  2. How many concurrent downloads does the "proprietary analysis" use when crawling a site?

  3. How many times will you download multi-megabyte installers for analysis?

  4. How does one become de-listed (no, not a rating change, just no listing)?

  5. How do you handle measures put in place to specifically prevent automated signups? Terms of use prohibiting automation?

  6. Do site operators actually welcome SiteAdvisor and its bots, knowing that (at best) they will receive no new traffic for the expense?
Dear Benfenders, I'm in the other 95% of websites. Don't have a kitten. Every for-profit business has to answer these types of questions at some point.
