Dry Loop Testing

My dry loop went offline yesterday and I have no clue as to why. I went out and came back and the 5200 wasn't syncing with the bell servers. Anyone have any clue as to what happened, or how to test the line, to make sure it's not my modem or phone cable? How can I test the jack to make sure it still works? Is there anything I can do on the inside side of the demarcation that might fix it?

I live in a basement apartment, and the landlords upstairs have an alarm system, and usually when they call a tech to fix it, the tech disconnects my line because there's not dial tone(dry loop). So I've had to tell him to hook it back up for me. This is possibly what happened yesterday, as I was out running errands for a few hours, but haven't been able to get a hold of my landlords to see if this is the case.

Any Ideas?

Dry Loop DSL -should- have a dialtone and a phone number assigned to it, the only difference is that they block the ability to make outgoing or incoming calls using that particular line. If you connect a telephone line to your DSL jack, there SHOULD be a dialtone. If there is not, there is something wrong with the line.

There should at least be approx 48-52 DC volts on the line... if not actual dialtone... check with a multimeter... if theres no voltage then your line is probably been pulled/damaged...

You can also check by hooking up a telephone. If you hear your own voice in the earpiece, there's a voltage on the line. If the earpiece if silent, there' no voltage.

My dry loop went out sometime between 1pm today. So I tried what the above poster suggested just now. I can't hear myself on the DSL pair. I can hear myself on the pair that I have my VOIP connected to though. I wonder what's wrong.

There's no physical connection. Either the wire was disconnected at the demarc, or somewhere between there and the CO. Even when there's no phone service you usually still have a line voltage, so I'm thinking it's something to do with your inside wiring. Check to see if you get voltage at the demarc. If you don't, you're going to have to get Bell to fix it.

How would I check to see that I have voltage at the demarc?

Actually, I'm pretty sure the house wiring is fine. I'm using my sister's friend's wireless right now and I set up ICS so that I could connect a cable to my VOIP box to see if it would work. It did and I have a dialtone throughout the house.

The inside wiring may be fine, but the wiring for your DSL might not be connected to the demarc. You mentioned that your neighbour's alarm company has previously disconnected your line from the demarc. In all possibility this sounds exactly like what has happened.

I'm not the original poster of this thread. I guess I should have said that at the beginning. I just coincidentally had the same problem as him today.

No one was home except my mother when the DSL went out and she has no idea what a demarc is. I went to check the demarc downstairs and the wiring for the DSL is connected to the demarc.

Doh, sorry dude

In your case, you're going to need to call Bell to figure out what's going on.

I called Bell this afternoon and they told me it would take them 24 hours to 5 days to do some tests. I was hoping it was just the wire or something so that I could fix it myself. I hate that Bell takes so long to fix things. But thanks for your help. At least I have this 50kb/s wireless to keep me going till they fix it.

If you paid for voice on that line, it is CRTC reg. that service is back in 24hrs.

As it is only dryloop for DSL....whenever they decide to send someone.

good luck

I only paid for dry loop service to bell. I have VOIP with Primus. I called Bell today and they told me that they can't fix it till Wednesday. So I got Rogers Extreme today. Since I had my own modem, they had the service up within minutes. Then I called bell to cancel and they told me that they have to charge me for another month. There's no way I'm paying for another month when I haven't had service for the last 3 days and won't have it for another 4 days. I'll have to argue with them on Monday. I used to recommend Sympatico to people because they don't throttle bittorrent and have no limits but will no longer recommend them. I'd rather use encryption to get around it with Rogers.

In fact, I do not recommend Rogers too, they are suck. Normally, you should give Bell 3-5 business days to fix the line problem, this is their work procedure. But they may fix it in 1-2 business days. BTW, in fact, in such a situation, you should talk to their business agent or supervisor, you may get one month free, because the line problem is not your fault. Once, I got release by their misunderstanding, I got one month free.

Yeah, I've heard the horror stories about Rogers as well. But I had Rogers for 4 years before getting Sympatico and it was great the whole time. So I might as well give them a chance again. Bell will have to change their 3 to 5 days proceedure if they want me as a customer again. The cost of the service is not the issue for me. The issue is not having internet and phone service for the week. Going with Rogers allowed me to have internet and phone service within minutes so I will stay with them unless I have problems like this with them.
