VA - Verizon Rumor, can someone confirm?

2 rumors I heard.

1. Verizon will be dropping the 5/2 service and offering 15/2 30/5 and 45/5. The pricing structure will be 15/2 34.95, 30/5 $44.95 and I think the $199 for the 45/5? Again, the prices reflect the $5 discount for combined services.

Has anyone else heard anything like this??

2. I was told you can stream recorded programs from the DVR over the coax network to standard non DVR boxes. Basically use the DVR as a video server.

Has anyone heard or confirmed this??

My FISO TV will be installed later this month, so I am hopeful #2 is true and is functional!

Thanks in advance.

Are there any sites that can confirm these rumors? FiOS hasn't even been fully deployed yet and Verizon is already cutting the prices? That would be a bad move since it hasn't gotten a really strong customer base yet.

They really are not cutting prices, they are just upping the bandwidth for the same price. Could be seen as price cutting? Is the glass half empty or half full?

Might be to really put the crunch on cable. This might be real competition and really get fence sitters to make the FIOS leap!

If this info is accurate (which I think it is, just when will it be gospel), it is good for all the FIOS customer base and future FIOS customers.

This is what I've heard. This will be more of a test trial to see what type of demand each service level has and to compete with cable companies who are going to up their speeds as they put in switched video hardware within the next six months to a year.

1.5Mbps/768Kbps for 14.95/month.
3Mbps/1Mbps for 19.95/month.
5Mbps/2Mbps for 24.95/month.
10Mbps/2Mbps for 29.95/month.
15Mbps/2Mbps for 34.95/month.
15Mbps/5Mbps for 39.95/month.
30Mbps/2Mbps for 44.95/month.
30Mbps/5Mbps for 49.95/month.
45Mbps/5Mbps for 69.95/month.

Extreme their with speeds of 50Mbps/15Mbps for 199.95/month.

These are all the plans and price offerings they have been looking at and some or all of them could be rolled out soon. Please note that I've been told that any increase in speed will be added at no extra charge. So if you pay for the 15/2 plan today if they upgrade the same priced plan to say 30/2 you will get the 30/2 upgrade without having todo anything. Soon customers will be able to easily upgrade and downgrade their service level at anytime they want. One change per month will be imposed so you don't up the speed for two days at a partial rate to download tons of stuff only to drop back on the third day for the rest of the month.

That's cool, hope its not for VA only!

30/5 would be cool for $44.95...
30/2 for $44.95 would only be matching a cablevision OOL price plan (boost @ $44.95), I'm sure they'd make it 30/5 and not 30/2 because you need those upstream packets to be more 'available' as to maximize the 30 side, asynchronous speeds on the order of the ratio 10:1 you get in the area of 24-28mbit in reality. For 30/5 to reach 29.x-30.5 you need 4.75-5.02 up,, a ratio of 6:1

6 x 5 = 30 or thereabouts. Due to packetshapng on VZ, you hardly see 15, much less to say 30.. these REAL speeds are mostly for "speed-test" freaks who run them a few times too many per day! Sure more speed! send it my way!

LH, thanks for this confirming info. Seems that there is some substance to this info!

HS - Look at my post, you will see McLean, VA.

I just picked this increased speed info up recently from some field folks. Do not know where the market will be, but I heard this locally.

We have full FIOS Phone, Data & TV offered here in Fairfax County, VA. If Fairfax County (population 1 Million + politics central)approved the TV, should be fairly easy for most other areas to approve I would assume.

Install today had newer NID (611??), power supply and battery case and appears that Verizon is now making the wireless D-Link routers standard for new installs, at least in this area. Seems Verizon is locally gearing up and betting on a lot of customers adding video soon. Tech was updating firmware for video capability even though install did not have video. I had him install RG-6 from NID to inside for future video to simplify video upgrade.

Also was informed that ActionTech may be supplying a new router with internal NIM for video.

1. Not happening yet. Verizon will first offer the 30/5 for $54.95 when the cable companies start to offer 10/1 services but the 45/5 would be worthless if u have a 30/5 line. The only expected upgrade that would make verizon go over 50dl would be DOCSIS 3.0 which is still barely getting into the finally stages of the production.

2. Verizon will offer a ON demand feature in the future but im not sure what your asking about though. Im pretty sure after they have on deamand feature up and running at Full speed you will be amazed.

LonghornXP, are those bundled with POTS prices? I'd assume they are, since the bottom is $14.95.

Why would they up their speeds when they don't even have their full network up yet?

In every market except cablevisions they don't need too.

The only market that they would need to would be cablevisions but would they really do that just to compete with cablevision ?

If they would create this long list of "tiers" with so many prices they will effectivly be giving the finger to those with DSL. I will end up paying more money for a much slower service offered by the same company.

That would piss me off.

I have no problem with them get rid of the copper, but I can see it now. I'll be paying more for less for 10 years till fiber gets to me.

Just like in 99' when the cable company said I would get two way cable in six months, I was on a one way cable modem, anolog modem upstream/cable down. Extremely unstable, and cost the same as regular cable modems that went way faster. I got tired of them charging me more for less and will never go back to cable again. Oh, and they still havn't upgraded cable here.

@verizon.n

It's all fine and well for people to be morally outraged that Verizon is only offering us DSL and not FiOS. (I can't get FiOS yet either.) But it's important to remember that many of us will NEVER see FiOS. Seidenberg has stated publicly that VZ may well sell off some of its more rural lines in the future to help raise capital.

Then, Ryno, your line may be owned by some small independent telco like Palmerton Telephone and you'll be paying DSL prices like this: »www.ptelco.com/dsl.html

Actually, while they don't *have to* except in areas where their offering are actually competed with, their bandwidth costs have just fell, and fell rather hard. The MCI acquisition (MCI is now part of Verizon Business, or VZB) has put a major dent in what Verizon was paying for bandwidth. They are able to preempt the competition by offering more bandwidth at pricing they can't match for *technological* reasons.

Just keep in mind not all cable companies are the same.

Cablevision can match the bandiwdth and make it cheaper then what verizon can.But keep in mind cablevision is an exception.

I don't see new speeds rolling out in all parts of their network.

Why roll out 45/5 speeds in places where time warner or com cast can't even reach 10/1?

I only see new speeds rolled out maybe in the ny metro area to compete with cablevision who can match verizons speeds.

Got the 15/2 right now, I wouldnt mind upgrading to the 50/15 once the price goes down. OOL will never ge able to catch up to fios. You can only go so fast on that copper wire.
