| 2 computers
I have a client that wants 2 computers connected to their cable internet. We hooked up a router and configured it. Every now and then one of the computers loses connection. This happens quite often. We went as far as getting a new cable modem, tried a switch instead of the router. Still no success! yet when I bring the clients computer home and hook it up to my ADSL switch, it works everytime. There is 2 cable internet accounts in the clients residence. Is the other modem interferring? I cant figure out why these 2 computers wont stay connected all the time. |

| I wonder why this is happening.
The router creates it onw network which the modem cannot see. Therefore, the modem is not even in the picture in this case, as all it can see is an IP address and a hardware firewall.
With one of the computers losing an IP address (which is most likely the issue) the device assigning the address is the router, NOT the modem. Therefore the router is the issue. How do I know this? The internet connection is still available on one computer, which means the modem and the router have an active DHCP lease, and an active 2 way connection.
Being that they are a client, I presume you are some type of technician who works with computers. If you are, you should know this. If not, welcome to the world of routers.
Roughly 50 % of the internet calls I take have to do with routers failing to renew the DHCP lease, freezing, or just dying.
Easiest thing to do for this client is powercycle the router. It's all they can do, as it forces a renewal of the DHCP lease if the router is nto dead to the world. Powercycling the modem only clears the modem out, and does not renew the IP address.
This issue happens at random. I've had people call in and not have an issue in 6 + months, I've had people call in that have this happen every 2 weeks.
The modem has no effect on this after the router is in place. You can swap modems till the cows come home, and the issue will remain.

| The NIC and router lights wont come on with the one computer. Like it has a bad connection. So I changed the cable and it still wont work. I even bypassed the router and went straight into the cable modem. Still no lights and connection. The other computer on the lan connects fine. I did a loopback test and that was fine. I took the clients computer home and it connected to my lan with no problems. I wonder if this is a power issue? They have everything running off of one power bar. |
