Almost there - Windows 98 advice needed

Hi - I posted this on the Verizon thread but thought this might be a good location also.

Problem: Westell not "seeing" my win 98 box/connection.

Description: Verizon DSL installed and humming beautifully on my Win XP box for weeks now. Refurbished an old Dell (Win 98) for my kids to use and thought it would be fun to network. DLink DWL Wireless PCI Adapter installed, and is successfully getting the signal!

Now for the above problem. When I go into Control Panel ->Network, I only see 3 options:
1) Client for Microsoft Network
2) DLink wireless adapter
3) TCP/IP

I went into TCP/IP and input the DNS 192.bla bla bla, but the web still doesn't work. I went to "Gateway" tab and input ther same numbers. Nothing seems to let internet explorer open the web. I just get a "cannot find server or DNS error". I tried Internet Explorer ->Tools -> Internet Options ->Connect via LAN, but that did nothing.

I'm kinda goin crazy 'cause I'm almost there. My signal is strong and getting picked up by my wireless card in the old box, but I can't open the web for whatever reason. I know its something stupid and simple - has to be.

Thanks for any input you may have!
Dave

Make sure the wireless function is turned ON in the Westell.

Check that your computer recognizes the network adopter. Look in the Hardware Manager.

Here are some instructions on how to setup Win. 98 network, that is where I started: »www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/netwo···nfig.htm

Re: Almost there - Windows 98 advice needed

Thanks for that reply. You know what that link shows me that I've also seen other places? Not only in the "Configuration" window do you see the Adapter, but you also see the connection data for the protocol for the Adapter described as "NetBEUI -> D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter". Or "TCP/IP -> Dialup Adapter".

My Problem is I don't see a "TCP/IP ->D-Link Wireless Adapter" option there. I only see the following three things:
1. Client for Microsoft Networks
2. D-Link DWL 510G Wireless Adapter
3. TCP/IP

There is no mention of linking my adapter with TCP/IP. Help!!
