I have a Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch, Model BEFSR41.
Every 10 minutes or so, the connection drops for no reason.
I use firefox and it says Looking for page..., whenever the connection is dropped. This also happens for Internet Explorer. So it has nothing to do with my browser.
I really dont know what to do, maybe go into port forwarding? No idea.
Also, I have tried disconnecting the router, resetting it, and restarting the computers, and just keeping everything off for a few hours.

| I'm not sure I understand the problem. Is your loss of connection ONLY with the router connected, or do you lose connectivity even with the router disconnected? The reason I ask is because I have the same problem with an older Windows ME system: losing all Internet connectivity after 15 minutes. After a reboot, all is OK for another 15 minutes.
If your loss is only during router use, then you know the problem is with the router and you can try all sort of resets, re-installation (see the Linksys web site for auto installation, or just shoot it -- and get another one. Good luck...

it disconnects when the router is connected...I am connected 24/7. Except when the connection drops. |

Looking at the label on the bottom of your BEFSR41 does it list a version nimber?
If you go to the routers web interface at »192.168.1.1 then navigate to the [Status] page. What firmware revision is currently loaded on it? |

I think I just solved this very problem I had myself. I had the same issue where my router continually and randomly dropped connection. I know it was the router because I was able to watch the router's (linksys WRT54G) status page and I watched the WAN IP change every five minutes or so unless it was under continuous load. I found the problem to be that I was unaware that my DSL modem to which the router was connected had a rather extensive set of internal configuration options of its own. I connected the modem directly to my computer through my NIC and a sticker on the bottom told me its config ip was 192.168.0.1 so I connected to that with a web browser and there was the internal configuration for my SpeedStream 5100 modem. Under the advanced options was a tab for PPP which I clicked and I found that the Modem was assuming that it was the source of the PPPoE connection. Knowing that my router made the PPPoE connection I set the MODEM for the second option (let another computer or router handle PPP) and since I made that change my connection has been rock solid. While I was in there I cleared the logs too. I hope this helps you with your connection drop issue I know I pulled my hair out trying to figure this one. |

1 edit | Or you can leave the PPPoE on the modem,and set your router to a Static IP address(screenshot 1). Configure the modem as shown in(screenshot 2). The DNS Server IP addresses you get fron the modem's Connection Information page(screenshot 3).This setup allows you to access the modem through the router.
NOTE:This setup is only for SBC/at&t DSL service using a SpeedStream 4100 or 5100b(5-lights) modem.This will not work for the 5100a(4-light) modem. |

Under this configuration are you able to connect to the DSL modem IP to configure it without connecting it directly to the PC? If so it is preferable. Currently with my router handling the PPPoE, I can't seem to find a way to add a route to connect to the DSL modem 192.168.0.1. My router is default so it is 192.168.1.1. I would be interested to know. Thanks. |

go to the linksys website and download the firmware for that model number and exact version number and upgrade the firmware of your router |

You change the router's LAN IP from the default IP of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.X.1(X being any number between 2 to 254).Just remember when you change the LAN IP of the router,that will be the IP address you use to access it. |

I tried it right after I posted that and it got the desired results. Under my other config I couldn't actually get to the Modem unless it was connected directly to my computer but with this config it works and my router is still 192.168.1.1 and working. Thanks for the info. |

Did you change the LAN IP on the router? And yes you have to configure the modem correctly,first hooked directly to your PC.Once the modem is configured,then you connect it to the WAN port of the router. |

1 edit | This is my setup for the SpeedStream 4100 or 5100b modem to a Linksys router. This setup allows you to access the modem's user interface through the router. Make sure your NIC is set to Obtain an IP address automatically.
First,hook the modem to your PC,and access the modem by entering »192.168.0.1 into your web browser's address bar
Second,go into the modem's user interface and change the PPP Location to "PPP is on the modem". Click "Save Changes".
Third,enter your username and password in to the Connection Configuration page. Select "Always attempt to connect" for the Connection type,and put a tick in the "Let LAN device share Internet address?" --No, use private IP address. Click "Save Changes".
Now the modem is set to connect to the internet.Disconnect the modem from your PC. Plug the modem into the WAN port of the router. Now plug your PC into one of the router's LAN ports. Access the router's user interface,and go to the LAN IP Setup. Change it from the default IP address of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.X.1 (X being any number from 2 to 254).Click Apply. Note:To access the router,you will enter the LAN IP address you entered previously.
Now to set the router's WAN connection type. Manually configure your WAN Internet Connection. Under Basic Settings "Use a Static IP Address". Enter the following.
IP Address 192.168.1.64
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
Gateway 192.168.0.1
Next enter the Domain Name Server(DNS)address. Get these from your modem's Connection Information page.Now that the Static IP,Subnet Mask,Gateway IP,and the two DNS server IP's are entered,click Apply. |
