What webhosting companies offer port 26 open and allow you to manually update subdomain redirects? (not all allow it)

1 edit | Oops I see it was moved.
I've tried peoplehost and 1and1 (there horrible when it comes to setting up e-mail and having to explain how to accept port 587 to one of my friends who is totally blind and gets tons of spam on her oceanic cable account.. i gave up)
I'm currently with bluehost and they.. SUCK!

| reply to robertfl I guess I'm not really clear on what you're asking for. I thought I was but then read your post here: »Need advice/opinion on Webhosting
Why would you want your webhost to send mail on port 26? Are you running a mailserver at home? If not, how is configuring a client to send on port 26 any different than using port 587?
As far as the subdomain redirects, can you elaborate? Are you just asking about creating subdomains on the webserver itself or looking to have subdomains handled by different machines (hence the IP forwarding)?? -- "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." --Steven Wright |

| said by robertfl :It's not just that the username is a bunch of letters and numbers with 1and1. Correct. That have a unique naming convention for setting up POP accounts, but it's a one-time configuration issue. The users don't have to type it in everytime and can use their username@domain.com to login to 1&1's webmail.

Are you trying to add a subdomain (say foo.example.com) on the same server that example.com lives on? That's not a redirect, it's a subdomain, and can be achieved easily if the host has CPanel.

robertfl Premium join:2005-10-10 Mary Esther, FL | I want to be able to do audio.subdomain.com go to IP: 127.0.0.1 I don't think thats possible without calling the providor and having them manually do it unless its just this hosting providor i'm on.

| How about managing your DNS with a third party? ZoneEdit offers free DNS hosting for a certain number of TLD's. You could just add/change A records there instead of fooling with a webhost's DNS.
I've been using them for years and they're rock solid. -- "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." --Steven Wright |

robertfl Premium join:2005-10-10 Mary Esther, FL 1 edit | Now is that possible to get that and keep my current webhosting and email providor?

1 edit | Sure is. To prevent an interruption of services I'd recommend doing things in the following order:
•Sign up for an account at ZoneEdit. Add your domain (ignore the initial warnings about the nameservers not pointing at them) •Create 'A' records (IP pointers) for your primary domain and desired subdomains. (i.e. hostname.tld points to your current host's IP address -- ex: 12.34.56.78) •Create 'MX' records for your domain (i.e. hostname.tld is the 1st mail exchanger for hostname.tld) •Change your nameserver entries with your domain registrar to point at ZoneEdit's designated nameservers. Should be seamless. |
