| reply to ePCdoctor Re: AntiVirus Poll 2006
Voted both AntiVir and Avast.
AntiVir has worked great for the past few years on my XP, but I don't like the v7 update. I've also seen it b0rk on a few Win98 systems, so for those I've replaced it with Avast (with all the extras turned off). Avast seems to work well even though it didn't have the greatest detection rates last time I checked. |

That would be true saying that I do work for Panda Software, but really being honest I have seen all the ones mentioned and still would say that Panda is the best out there doing what its designed to do. This may not be true for everyones because of the situations and software that they run on their machines will be different. There is not one Antivirus out there that will detect 100%, but the technology behind what Panda uses with its TruPrevent keeps the unknown threats at bay. BTW, there is a GUI version of Clamav.

| reply to Cool Dude Not advisable to run 2 AV's in real time, but you can have more than 1 installed, and just disable all but 1 with msconfig etc. You can flip back and forth like that, which is useful for comparing different ones. Some AV's might complain though, so you could be unlucky. I never have been though, and i've got 2 in right now.
You can of course run an AV + AT together in real time, which is what quite a few of us do, including myself, with NO problems. In fact it's another sheild in the armormont against nasties.

| reply to Jrb2 I have been through NortonAV, Trend Micro PC-Chillin and AVG over the years. I am now using Avast and I love it. Easy on the system, easy to use and covers all the bases. If I had to buy it I would, but I don't...so I won't -- Notme in STL |

I use ClamXav on my Mac... of course it hasn't picked up anything, but it works great and doesn't interfere with anything. | reply to Jrb2 Well, I voted too
But before I tell about it, I would like - to thank all of you who voted, - to thank all of you for your input, - to thank all who made the poll possible (board owners, Wildcatboy as Host, other friends for their advise, etc.), - to thank all who made the other recent 2006-polls and the previous polls, - to apologize for the AV's missed in the poll (which is my fault).
I voted: (on Win 98 SE) - NOD32 resident (and on-demand), - KAV 4.5 Pers Pro on-demand.
Well, keep them coming your votes and posts; and please don't forget the recent nice 2006-polls about AS, AT and Firewall. |

1 edit | reply to Psicop None on my pc. For others I recommend antivir if they don't want to pay; otherwise any of the major vendors.
said by Psicop :Avast free. I would like to hear from those who voted none why aren't they using an AV. Maybe because they are Linux users, maybe because they think a router is enough. G. As someone pointed out above, a firewall will stop worms but not viruses.
In my case, one PC runs SUSE. Another is Windows but is single-user. That is, it does require logon, but I'm the only one who uses it.
How would I get a virus? Run an executable email attachment? Why would I do that? |
