Yes Apple is the best
Yes Apple is outselling all other MP3 players
But this little $ 12 guy will play 35 hours of songs.
Bottom line an iPod is a simple storage device. Linear. It plays this song or the other.
A Treo is on the other hand, besides a phone, a recorder, a Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Mail/iCal/iPhoto device that lets you receive a file, edit it and send it back edited. Like a real computer in your pocket. With live TV watching, as many MP3s you can fit in a 8 gig SD (some 1600 songs), and 25,000 Palm programs.
Now the Palm has too many features and too many programs. No order and no discipline...crashing often, and not Apple sexy.
The iPhone is needed. That is why Apple is going for it. And I am proud of Apple for it. I think they should have 2 iPhones:
iPhone and iPowerPhone. One looks like a small phone, the other has a keyboard laser projection and is like a Treo power device. |

| 35 hours? It says it will record 35 hours of voice, which is about the lowest quality audio you're gonna get. If you like listening to mp3s at 32k bitrate, hey, knock yourself out.
You're just outta control with your iPhone dreams now. Laser projected keyboard? What the hell's the point of a PDA if you need somewhere to project the keyboard? Not to mention that iPowerPhone might be the dumbest name in history.
Apple MIGHT introduce a phone. I'm pretty sure it will be nothing like what you described. I think it's time for you to go outside.

If you are gonna play the storage game, you're gonna lose. SD cards that 1 year ago were breaking the 1 Gig range are now 1 year later 8 Gigs. Next year SD cards will be 60 Gigs.
So any SD enabled MP3 player will, depending on what SD card you put in, play songs. At 5 megs a song, 8 Gigs hold 1600 songs. Enough to commute.
1600 songs are at 3 minutes per song or 80 hours.
There are other MP3 players out there. I was not pushing people to buy the $ 12 MP3 player. My point is MP3 players are quickly becoming a commodity, as what they do is simple.
I was really congratulating Apple in coming out with the iPhone. Those 5 rumours from Mac Buyer in the last week are not for nothing.
What I think we should be doing instead of saying it is stupid for Apple to bring out an iPhone is to help instead in brainstorming as to what features we want in it.
OK the laser kbd was pushing it. Camera? Wifi? 320 x 320 screen like a Treo? Speakerphone? Mini keyboard like a Treo or like a Nokia? |

I have a cell phone with a bluetooth headset.
The phone has streaming video news, weather, sports, and music. Also supports buying music, games, and other applications, a web browser, and a camera. I played with all that stuff for about one week.
Now I never touch the phone other then dropping it in my pocket or clipping it to my belt. I click the button on my headset and dial by voice, or answer a call. That's it.
So while I suppose there are people that are interested in a 'super phone', I would not be one of them.

It appears that you are using your phone as a simple phone. No problem. You are not using it for music, for games, for web, for camera. Sounds like you don't have a long commute, or that when out you are not the connected type.
No problem. There are 1000 behaviors when "out."
Fine. Sometimes the best time is quiet time.
Now I am the same way half the time. But when I go out for vacation, or here in Florida with the hurricanes I spent 21 days outside home and office (no power, no gasoline, no food in Miami at the supermarkets), my Treo was my email, my browser, etc. I even purchased an Apple laptop during that time in the Orlando store. Being connected was important to the business, to entertaintment. Sometimes I go walking the dog and listen to music.
At any rate, there is no question that more and more phones are incorporating more and more features.
And the whole point of the Apple experience is to be not less technology adept, but rather more ease-into-technology...like friendly-technology devices that let you do this and that easier than with the competition.
Sounds like Apple is getting an iPhone. After it comes out all will love it. For now I'd like to get some support. The survey mentioned above provides that. |
