My speed Jumped

I'm on the Northshore of Boston on CmCast Cable HSI. Had standard 3Mbps since 1997. Been nearly flawless. Got the auto bump to 6Mbps and then paid the extra $8 - 10 to get 8. Never got there however. I chalked it up to heavy use on our node. Didn't realize that service was bumped to 16 Mbps aut6omatically about 2 months ago!

Signal got unstable two weeks ago so I ran 20 or so DSLReports line qualities and found that the final local server was dropping 50% of packets! Reported to ComCast, they confirned it and LISTENED to me((???Wow.)

Hooked up to the cable directly I started getting 16 Mbps...scarey fast. Hooked to my Linksys BEFSR41 router and 24 port ChipCom hub and bumpbbump bump 6 Mbps again..

Rather than try a firmware updates (both pieces 12 years old), got a NEW FAST ETHERNET router (BEFSR41 Vr 4.2) and a 12 port hub. Hooked into the house lan and Blamo 16 Mbps.

Now I'm waiting for FIOS now that ComCast has bumped cost by 20% (now $53 /month).

Here in the Chicago NW suburbs, my speeds are back to being capped at 8Mbps (first few seconds in the 20s, then back down). From 12/5/06 to 1/22/07 I was getting 25-26Mbps sustained most of the time, with peaks of 30Mbps (using 9 concurrent connections).
You are back to normal powerboost. You had "permaboost" for a while where Comcast was testing capacity or something. I had it too in NJ, sustained 32Mb/s using 10 concurrent connections in Newsbin. Now back to 8Mbs after about 10 seconds of 30Mbs. I am hoping they upgrade to 16Mb soon here

Ya, that is not normal. With my 6000/768, I start around 4200KB/sec, drop down within 2-3 seconds to 2500KB/sec and finish around 920KB/sec.
Yep. Either my area is congested or they are still working out the tweaks in my area.

I'm not complaining too much cause after all I'm only paying $24.95/mo. for HSI.

My speeds are still blazing fast with PB. I'm on the 8mbs tier. The first 20 seconds or so I hit 25mbs download speed. After that it gradually falls down to 8.8 mbs sustained download.

So tests like the OOL ftp tests, you don't even see inflated rates within the first 25% of the download?
The speed test may start off at around ~1250kbps. But it immediately drops (within seconds) to around 600kbps. I have yet to see any sustained powerboost for the first 20meg or 25% of a download.

So speed tests yield PowerBoost, but actually downloads don't report it?
Is that what you are seeing?

What tier is that?
It's the tier from my eye as I watch people around me get faster speeds.

I'm on the 8/768 plan. Speedtests yield around 12-18mb.

Get this, I am on the 256Kbps tier that Comcast no longer offers, but since I had it with Adelphia I was Grandfathered in

I noticed this morning my connection seemed a little faster, so I ran a speed test and it clocked in 400Kbps down, I foung that very surprising, so I did a test dl and the transfer speed confirmed it was really 400Kbps, and I just ran a test again to see if it stuck around and it still is, and considering I do not qualify for Powerboost anyway, it would not account for it

now I realize 400Kbps is nothing, but I find it interesting to get a "free upgrade", no matter how minor, especially considering that speed tier is no longer officially offered

I am assuming I am benefitting from some upgrade to the network that may or may not have been intentional, lol

Well that sucks! I am also in Lynchburg, and was on the 4400/440 tier, and my speeds have been DRASTICALLY slow over the last 1½ weeks of Comcast. Booooo!!!

Seriously, my speeds have been drooping down to a consistent level of 500-1000kbps (up and down and up and down!), instead of the advertised 6000/780. With Adelphia I was ALWAYS an extremely consistent 4400/440 "plateau".

Enhanced Cable service - 47.95
Comcast HSI at 6000/384 - 44.95

Total: 92.90

100% more pr0n with 50% less time: Priceless!

There are somethings money can't buy, for everything else, there's Pr0nBoost!
