Download Speed: 9386 kbps (1173.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 354 kbps (44.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

from speakeasy that is....i remember like a month ago it was around 6400 kbps. So i guess they are boosting up the speeds.

Forget Speakeasy and other Flash or Java tests!

True Speed

Bogus Inflated Speed
PLEASE folks...

The truest speed tests are based on the time it takes to download a large file from a fast server. Flash and Java tests are convenient, but not necessarily accurate. Here are some of the large downloadable test files (or parent folders of test files) that I use:

1) »ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/pub/test64
2) »speedtest.rochester.rr.com/test.zro
3) »ftp://ftp.aol.com/aol6.0/171340/setupaol
4) »ftp://ftp.newaol.com/aol6.0/179902/
5) »speedtest.rochester.rr.com/

DIRECTIONS: Start the d/l of a large file with IE and let it run at least 50% of the way through. Observe the transfer rate at the point where it settles in at a fairly stable number. That's your speed. Do the same from all five locations above. The best result of the bunch is more or less your *true* maximum speed.

*I'm on the standard "silver" plan. According to the conversion calculation at »www.matisse.net/bitcalc/, my file download clocked at 809 Kilobytes/sec is equal to 6472 kilobits per second, which is totally in line with Comcast's present 6600 kbps download cap.

Ok, ran those speedtests. Average speed at 50% was 1.3. Ran speakeasy 6 times across a 4 hour period from 6:30 to 10:30 PM, lowest was 11 Meg down, highest was 15 Meg. Either the bursting has been expanded somehow or an upgrade is there.

Well I just downloaded most of the 64MB optonline FTP test file in IE and got 790 KB/sec (6320 kbps). I also ran a java-based speedtest and got this:

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-03-23 07:46:39 EST:
12015 / 361
Your download speed : 12015 kbps or 1501.9 KB/sec.
That is 163.5% better than an average user on comcast.net
Your upload speed : 361 kbps or 45.2 KB/sec.
That is 8.1% worse than an average user on comcast.net

Then I ran one of the Flash-based Speakeasy tests and got this:

Download Speed: 9024 kbps (1128 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 356 kbps (44.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Which do I believe???

I actually prefer the speakeasy test to the optionline one.

Why ? It has always been the more accurate overall number. The Opti test will give you a very good feel for what you can expect downloading a single file. But for me anyway all my traffic is newsgroups with 10 threads running and I ALWAYS beat out the opti test with my news downloading, but the speakeasy test usually shows me what my lines max is and with 10 threads I hit that.

Thats what everyone said about cablevision. they didnt go 3.0 and are providing speeds of 15/2 and 30/2
The next version of DOCSIS is 2.0 not 3.0.

That's why I provided links to alternate large file downloads. Also, take a look at this:

theres a .bat file to download the 64mbyte test from the OOL servers, show your speed and then delete it. i mirrored it at »dump.oliverwine.info//files/1/Pu···pool.zip in case you want to use it. i prefer it or a long newsgroups download to any test.

Regarding the 16/1Mbps tier rumor.

Is that a healthy ratio? I mean its 16:1.

That is one of the highest ratios of all time if not the highest.
3000/128 was a common speed tier back in the old @home days. 23.4:1.

my predictions

* if you live in an area where you only get comcast HSI, you will not be seeing 10/1 or anything like that except as a more expensive tier, if at all.

* if you don't bundle HSI with another comcast service, you will be stuck at 6M/368K until you either bundle or pay for a higher tier.

* prices will not go down, no matter what.

As long as we only have duopoly competition (no competition for some), comcast will not lower prices. Roberts has said repeatedly he doesn't believe in competing on price. As long as there is no real competition, there will not be lower prices; speeds may increase, but price will not go down.

16 MB down? Yeesh. How 'bout some upload, Comcast? Maybe 2MB like Fios?

From CHSI Denver server to Fort Collins multiple runs average just fractionally **over** 16Mbps (2100KBps). Testmy.net is just over 14Mbps. In the many years I've has HSI, SpeakEasy has never been even remotely reliable except once in a while at 0dark30.

Upload to Testmy.net is 755 which is typical.

I am subscribed to the 8M/768K tier. I usually run a speed test once or twice a week and this is the first time I've seen anything over maybe 8.5Mbps.

I think most people actually saw faster speeds than that though. I for one got about 10000/1200 back in the @Home days with no transfer caps or anything. The fastest I ever downloaded was 1.33MBytes/sec and fastest upload was 201KBytes/sec and I would sometimes do 500 or 600 gigs a month in transfer.
