Re: Unofficial Next Comcast Speed Upgrade Rumor Topic

Um.... er... uh.... figuer there might be some form of traffic shaping going on???

Also, there may be some delay depending on what you use to measure your speeds.

When I use straight FTP I seem to get better speeds than trying to download the same file via a browser.

I push some fairly large files via FTP through a VPN and it goes pretty quick. I also have an HTTPS server set up within my VPN and that one seems to be somewhat slower.. in the 30-50% range...

nasadude,

Comcast has a habit of standardizing things across the board for the most part. Whether or not this remains the same or if there will be dedicated 'test bed' areas is yet to be seen.

The current speeds run at 4Mb(no cable tv), then 6Mb and 8Mb. Whether or not the standard 4Mb speed will get a boost is unknown. My guess is that if the gold tier is booted to 10Mb that the numbers would shift to 8Mb for the silver package and 6Mb for the standard speed. But there is nothing set in stone for that just yet so who knows what will happen.

As for paying higher prices for higher speeds, yes that is a reality. While it'd be nice to give everyone dirt cheap broadband at the prices they want, it just isn't going to happen. Gotta keep people paid to keep all that stuff running after all.

Just got upgraded to 6Mbit/768kbit for standard. According to the website 16/1 is available for $53/mo.

Still more expensive and slower than FIOS.

Sorry that I didn't like that important fact. Howard County, MD actually. Only county in MD to have FIOS TV.

Fort Wayne, IN (the only city in Indiana with FiOS) is now upgraded. Upon power cycle of SB5100, my speed is now 6000/768. The package of 16/1 is available for $53/month.

Just got the fastest speed test I've ever seen here in Indy. I'd be curious to see if anyone else in the Indy area gets these kind of results:

I used this test site: »ind-dsl-sun.choiceone.net/speedtest/

dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-03-25 00:49:13 EST:
14081 / 688
Your download speed : 14081 kbps or 1760.1 KB/sec.
That is 204.7% better than an average user on comcast.net

Your upload speed : 688 kbps or 86 KB/sec.
That is 65.7% better than an average user on comcast.net

»/speedtests/14···43265662

I'm on the 8000/768 tier.

EDIT: Disregard this. That speed test is not reliable. Thus the results are inaccurate.

I am in Connersville, Indiana. About 40 miles south east of INDY ... Only competition to Comcast here is Verizon DSL and wireless ..

Here is what I get from Customer Service when asking about th 16/1 tier ...

Karen(Sat Mar 25 03:13:03 EST 2006)>Thank you for contacting Comcast. I am happy to assist you today. My name is Karen. May I have your name please?

How can I assist you today?
Branden(Sat Mar 25 03:13:08 EST 2006)>I would like to know when the 16/1 speed tier will be available to me ..

Karen(Sat Mar 25 03:13:45 EST 2006)>I'll look into that for you. Just a moment, please while I process your information.

Karen(Sat Mar 25 03:17:17 EST 2006)>We have since launched the new speeds in: Ft. Wayne, IN, Howard County, MD, and Sarasota, FL . No word yet when new markets will be added.

Branden(Sat Mar 25 03:17:32 EST 2006)>ok do you think Nationwide by end of this year though ?

Karen(Sat Mar 25 03:18:33 EST 2006)>Comcast is extending according to area specifications. Sorry I do not have more information at this time.

Branden(Sat Mar 25 03:18:25 EST 2006)>ok Thank you for your help , are you able to transfer me to the television department I have a question for them too .. Thank You

Karen(Sat Mar 25 03:19:06 EST 2006)>Yes, I would be glad to.

"Comcast is extending according to area specifications."

I take that 1 of 2 ways ...

1) Ability for the area to handle the 16/1 speeds

or

2) What other competition is in the area ...

I just wonder what "area specifications" actually consists of..

It's funny, back in the old days in late 98-early 99 when I lived in New Hampshire and had MediaOne I used to get over 10mbps down on speed tests. And now they are just catching up to what I had 7 years ago.

Something going on in Illinois. The other day I posted this, »What Is This?, about new entries in my modem log. Today I downloaded the newest build of Vista and captured this screenshot. The intial burst was over 1800KB. During the whole download it stayed at the level in the shot or creeped a bit higher. Took 30 minutes to download the whole image which was almost 3 gigs.
This was from MS server in Europe also. Couldn't connect to the U.S. server.

I am in Fort Wayne, Indiana and I just rebooted my modem. I went from 6000/384 to 6000/768. I guess that's better than nothing.

San Jose, California (Specifically Saratoga):

previously, my speeds from Speakeasy SFO and Seattle servers were at 9000 kbps/723 kbps.

The last three days, when I've tested, East coast was still at around 9500, but west coast servers ran at 12000/723.

Something certainly is happening, even if Comcast is just extending their burst times.

I would really like faster speeds, Ive had to deal with 768 upload for like 2+ years and I would like to see 1.5 upload for hosting games online.

I agree. I've been trying to get additional upload for about the same time, and couldn't even buy. You'd think they would atleast sell you more bandwith if you were willing to pay. My intermediate solution was to buy a second 768k line to run a dedicated on, and then play on the other line. That works a bit, but has never been ideal.

Good luck getting the upgrade. Hope I get it son too.

I dunno I just wish I could get DSL cant they ever find a way other then fiber to go over the 20,000 feet from CO, like a new kinda of DSL?

I live in Washington State and somehow I have a feeling that Fios is going to take at least 5 years to install in Washington State if they ever do.

So in the meantime I will probably get a Comcast Upgrade by 1mb every year til its like 15 down and 1 up and the only reason to switch will be price.

Aside from areas with fiber or competing services I doubt there will be a speed increase soon.

I'm seeing some bursting in Illinois now but definitely no upgrade yet.

Fiber is the solution for DSL distance limitations, whether by FTTP, FTTC, or to serve a remote terminal and provide DSL.
since Fios is starting to be installed in the north king/south snohomish area, I don't think you can say "if they ever do", but 100% buildout anywhere is a long way off.

Mine isn't bursting. Look at the screenshot. Bursting doesn't last for 200+ megs.
I am getting 1200+ plus on every large download I've made since I posted that screenshot. The intial burst has gone as high as 1900, but, that only lasts about 15-20megs and it levels off at 1200+ for the duration.
I am willing to bet the new config file I got set me at 10/768.
