| reply to sortofageek Re: Unofficial Next Comcast Speed Upgrade Rumor Topic
I can confirm a speed upgrade to 17M/1M in Howard County, MD, according to the cap on my cable modem config file. Based on my speed tests, I can't seem to get more than 6M downstream, but easily getting 900+kbps upstream. Not sure if the downstream is a product of the test, my router, other Internet link, etc. |

1 edit | I am trying to run speed tests now for ZIPCODE 34235, but these speed test are HORRIBLE. I am currently testing my downstream by downloading from usenet via my giganews.com account. I am hitting 16mbit on that, and i am uploading to my webserver via ftp, 1mbit on that.
EDIT: None of these speed tests are even getting close to the numbers I am getting from giganews. These speedtests, i assume, are running their tests via HTTP protocol. Maybe comcast has traffic shaping on that protocol, but not NNTP(usenet). |

Maybe comcast has traffic shaping on that protocol, but not NNTP(usenet). They don't work for me either. I was able to reproduce speeds that I normally see when downloading large files by significantly reducing my RWIN (like 44K with a sub 20ms avg. latency?) while testing at the Nac.net server. Usually the speed tests on this site just hang for me.
The 64MB OOL download (~35 seconds) almost always corresponds to what I see on the Washington DC Speakeasy test. That is the one I use when I just want a quick spot check to verify if I am experiencing any congestion.
The tests on this site are wonky for me. For whatever reason they don't work for me too often, and they rarely represent the speeds I see when I'm downloading files or testing from other locations. |

| reply to phatoneusa said by phatoneusa :I dunno I just wish I could get DSL cant they ever find a way other then fiber to go over the 20,000 feet from CO, like a new kinda of DSL? I live in Washington State and somehow I have a feeling that Fios is going to take at least 5 years to install in Washington State if they ever do. So in the meantime I will probably get a Comcast Upgrade by 1mb every year til its like 15 down and 1 up and the only reason to switch will be price. Aside from areas with fiber or competing services I doubt there will be a speed increase soon. Even if there was such a thing, Verizon wouldn't deploy it in the first place. Why would they spend all the money to upgrade DSL services to this new technology when they'd have to throw it all out in a year or two down the road when they get around to deploying FiOS to your area? It wouldn't make any sense. |

| reply to AWS said by AWS :Something going on in Illinois. The other day I posted this, » What Is This?, about new entries in my modem log. Today I downloaded the newest build of Vista and captured this screenshot. The intial burst was over 1800KB. During the whole download it stayed at the level in the shot or creeped a bit higher. Took 30 minutes to download the whole image which was almost 3 gigs. This was from MS server in Europe also. Couldn't connect to the U.S. server. Same here ran a test from Speakeasy and my burst was up to 1800KB and leveled of to 1200KB
I noticed saturday night and moday day my cable was going in and out. Maybe WOW installing Fiber in my neighborhood has something to do with it? HMMMMMMMMMMMM |

| God, I am stupid. I walked out the door last week, dont remember exactly when, and comcast had dug a trench in my front yard. I didnt question it because I assumed it was for the neighbors too get access.
Now that I think about it, they had a fiber truck out next the vans, had a huge reel on it...why didnt that click.
I guess ive just come to expect comcast to suck or something, maybe its time I change my tune. |

| reply to sortofageek Going comcast due to last 2 months my Pacbell-SBC/Yahoo-now AT&T.
Due to major slow downs for half the day its good for 450-675 the other half its crap and does 50-120kps .In 7yrs we never had slowdowns or down time. we always got a certain amount all the time when I had different speed but same B-box
384-1.5 speed test was steasy and always was in the 1.2-1.4 bracket
1.5 to 3.0 was always steady testing at 2.2 and 2.4 bracket
My other reason is longtime users get screw like me.
Here is how My B-box or hub or router was too full The b-box was too full and we were getting major slowdown at 4pm to midnite.
one day they called to tell me I'm moving and the net will be down.
I said why.
They said too full .
I said I am paying 89$ a month and you moving me to a 4000 feet more away and the new users under 24$ can stay I said I am here 7yrs, I said thats not right. She said sorry I cant change this, your on list and said net will be up 15-20mins ever the higher up told me same thing.
Well how you like that I said to self.
So they move me 4000 feet to new B-box or hub or router still slow down 4pm to midnite and its worse due to 4000 feet farther b-box .I saw no differnce going to 6mb due to move of Box and over in good hrs it same as when I had 3.0 due to 4000kb-box move also called comcast they here next day Igot the 8mb/384 up not sure of up. Its cheaper in longer run too.I will after 3 days with comcast call sbc and get rid of home phone and internet I get all my call on cell just crap sellers on home phone. So I feel good now LOL |

| reply to sortofageek Am going to check on this tonight, but have a few questions:
- Are people finding that you have to power cycle the modem to get the upgrade?
- Is there a modem firmware upgrade needed for this? I thought there were some older versions that capped your speed at around 5.5 -- "Gone are the days when the lady said please" Grateful Dead--Brown-eyed Women |

| On some modems, the increase will be automatic. Most should be powercycled anyways(won't hurt).
Firmware, depends on the brand/model of modem. Powercycling will usually force the modem to pull new firmware/config. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |
