| reply to Steely these are not rumor as i have verified them with comcast and yes the 6 will go up to i believe he said 10/762 and the 8 will go to 16/1 but the technology isnt set yet he said they are testing two formats of firmware and going to decide which of the two to go with the places like sarasota which he did tell me about have it at no additional cost but its odd cause he said like your first 20 megs will fly at 16 then slow then fly again i'm not sure to the specifics but we talked [comcast tech ] for like 40 minutes about it lol |

What you just described is POWERBOOST, already released in many markets. It does work for small files, but isn't a true speed tier upgrade. |

You, D0nnie the anonymous and unregistered, say you've *verified* these new 10/762 and 16/1 speeds with an unidentified Comcast tech and therefore we're to now call this fact rather than rumor??? Sure, whatever you say D0nnie boy.
BTW, the original rumor surrounding the upgrades was that the new speed tiers would be rolled out by the summer of '06. Hmmm.....doesn't summer end like TOMORROW?

Comcast reported a record revenue-generating unit for the last quarter.
"High-Speed Internet revenues increased 22% to $1.2 billion in the second quarter of 2006, reflecting a 1.6 million or 20% increase in subscribers from the prior year and stable average monthly revenue per subscriber. Comcast ended the second quarter of 2006 with 9.3 million high-speed Internet subscribers or 22% penetration of available homes."

Comcast is doing just fine, and if anything, Verizon is losing customers to Comcast in their wired phone service due to CDV.
Verizon's numbers are high mostly because of their discounted DSL offerings, not because of FiOS. There just aren't enough FiOS subscribers, yet, to cause any kind of emergency-like reaction from Comcast.
FiOS Internet customers accounted for 111,000 of the net broadband connection additions in the second quarter 2006 and now make up 375,000 of the companys 6.1 million total wireline broadband connections, which have increased 47.9 percent compared with the second quarter 2005.

So, there you have it. Less than 400K FiOS subscribers with only a 15% average penetration in existing markets. Comcast has 9.3 million HSI subscribers and they are looking at a 20% increase from last year with over a 20% penetration in the market.
Nothing of any real significance has occurred to give Comcast reason to flinch. Hopefully that will change soon, for everyone's benefit. |

| Well, i'm supportive of verizon because i didnt even know they were laying fiber out here where i am till i got the ad in the mail sayin it was here. I finaly have a choice other than comcast or slow dsl.
You don't see all the different posts asking if this or that is fiber that the construction crews are laying? All the posts that ask how long from once its laid till it gets lit at the CO?
Once the fiber is out there, i would think alot of people would want to get away from the spotty service in some comcast markets. I would also think alot of people would want to save money. (not sure if all markets are the same, but i'm savin $12 a month). A handful would want it for faster speeds.
Comparing growth on an already built out network, to one still being built is not the best example really.
So verizon loses a few pots lines to comcast for CDV. Then theres the issues with losing modem sync, etc and your CDV isn't working so great anymore. Such as:
»[Connectivity] Intermittent Signal Loss - HSI, HDTV & Digital Ca »[Speed] Tallahassee, FL and Surrounding Area »[Speed] Near Dialup Speeds Lately »[Connectivity] Illinois NW suburbs intermittent problems »Minneapolis Northwest Suburbs
more if you like.
Now, they may not go back to verizon for a pots line, but if comcast cant keep the network working decently, that means your nice little CDV isn't going to be working so well either.
I'm so very glad fios is here in my area. If i gave my true opinion of comcast, i'd be banned pretty quick! |

| I'm not suggesting that Verizon FiOS is not a superior product to Comcast HSI, I was simply pointing out that the sluggish deployment is not having a desperate, immediate effect on Comcast's current HSI subscribers. Evidently, as has been pointed out earlier, not enough to cause Comcast to react.
CDV is not a typical VoIP phone service such as Vonage. I'm not relying completely on the internet from point to point when making a call. I have a separate modem for my phone service from my HSI service. I have had my CDV for 6 months now and I have never had a dead line, even through a power outage.
I will agree that FiOS is great, IF you can get it; however, I have Verizon telephone service too, and it cannot compare in quality or price to Comcast's CDV. And there are many more instances of CDV replacing Verizon's phone service than FiOS replacing Comcast HSI.
There are over 9 million HSI subscribers, you could show me 1000 posts where people have had connection issues and it still would not mean very much when looking at the whole picture. |

Comcast has inherintly been behind the curve when it comes to reacting to competition and speed upgrades. Most every other provider is pretty much done with upgrades before Comcast even starts to think about them.
To me, it is all because they know that in most of their coverage area they are the only game in town and people have no other choice. -- FWD#: 223611 |

| I understand that Comcast is often much slower to fully implement upgrades, but I have had 16/1 service since I signed up with Comcast in March. I do have competition in my region with Verizon FiOS, although Verizon has not yet, nor will they ever, drag fibre to my door.
It's seems as though the size of Comcast, added with the lack of competition, is what causes upgrades to stagnate. |

And just to add, I am in Richmond, VA where FIOS is currently rolling out and as you are, I am in an area of Richmond where we are pretty much scheduled to be last for the roll out. Comcast here has yet to even roll out Powerboos, much less increase speeds to compete against FIOS. -- FWD#: 223611 |
