| Wireless Oakland Pilots
Just curious - has anyone in the various pilot areas seen/tested/used the new Wireless Oakland POPs? I'd be interested to hear about where it's up and running (Troy is first, I believe)... as well as any technical info, problems, news, etc. -- "In a world of compromise, some don't." |

| The wireless oakland website is »www.oakgov.com/wireless/ and there have been some reviews here »muniwireless.com/municipal/projects/981 but not very promising so far...
I live in an area that will probably be the last corner of the county to be turned on, so hopefully they have it working before they get it to me...
I am so happy I have dsl, and if the pilot is any indication of service level, I will still be happy to pay for my dsl. -- The sooner we get behind schedule, the more time we have to catch up. |

| reply to bewale From the OakGov website:
"When will this service be available in my area?
The installation of the Wireless Oakland network has begun, however service is not yet available anywhere as of March 2006."
I don't know how people would review something that isn't even launched yet. People are probably complaining about not being able to effectively borrow access from Billy Bob down the street because they think everything is already active....
I don't know how well it will work, but I find it interesting that people are so eager to complain about something that is "free". |

| reply to bewale Can anyone say political obfuscation? My attempts to gain any meaningful technical information were like trying to pin down jello.
Here are copies of my correspondence with MichTel the Chosen Public/Private Partnership ISP this January.

Thank you for your interest in Wireless Oakland. Here are the answers to your questions.
1. You will need a computer and a WiFi card to access the free service in Oakland County.
2. You will be able to register for a Login name directly on the network when it is available in your area by simply connecting to our wireless service.
3. There is a lot of information on the site www.wirelessoakland.org
Thank you

Hi Tony,
Regular 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g Wi Fi then? The available information all specifies 5.8 GHz.
What SSID will I be looking for then to connect to? On which channel? I and many of my neighbors already leave our own wireless routers open to all.
I have already been to the Wireless Oakland web site and was not able to discern that any meaningful technical information was yet being offered there. For instance I did not see any map of the actual points of presence locations to know what direction to point a WiFi antenna toward. Even in the Troy demonstration area which is supposed to have been operational for some time now.
Thank You
Steve
yes 802.11b or g
When the SSID is up, it should be "Wireless Oakland."
There is currently no where for you to focus your antenna. Service is not available anywhere yet.
