2 edits | reply to ptrowski How exactly did Vonage "prove" anything? Hate to say it, but, yes, Vonage and all VOIP need the same regulations phone companies do. It is hilarious people on BBR give these idiots (any VOIP co) high ratings yet gripe it doesn't work half the time. They had to send me 5 gizmos b4 it worked. I had to reconfigure my whole home network to figure it out. Does it go b4 or after the router? Which port should I set it on? etc, etc, etc. Maybe they should ONLY allow it to be sold to a person that signs a waiver?
Perhaps, Vonage shouldn't SELL its product to someone unless they pass a tech test. OR, JUST PRINT A LABEL SAYING "NOT FOR 911 CALLS IN MOST CASES!"
And, BBR, you are so slanted it is pathetic. |

Plugged in the Cisco ATA186 into my D-link wireless router in 2003 and it just worked. It has stayed there for the past 2.5 years. |

| reply to rachelsfx They should make it simpler and more robust. My local cable company offers VoIP and the modem/VoIP are one unit that has a built-in battery to allow service during power failures.
If they only offer VoIP, their equipment should have and Ethernet IN (from internet) and Ethernet OUT (to Computer). This way it would be simpler for them to hard-wire any port forwarding and QoS needed to offer a reliable service. Heck, even include a battery for power failure. Put a warning label about installing a UPS for your DSL/cable modem and bingo...

It's called Internet (Ethernet In) and ports 1,2,3,4 (Ethernet Out). -- I have tried to see things from your point of view, but no matter how hard I try, or what I do, I just can't get my head that far up my ass. |

| Naaaa! Just one output port... No messing around with the VoIP device for any reason. Nothing, period! Make sure it works when it ships and then no one can mess with it. If you have multiple ports on the device it means you will probably need to set up DMZ, port forwarding and play with UPnP for all your PCs to work the way you want them. If the customer wants to share the connection, let him purchase a router to set-up behind the VoIP device and let him mess around with it as much as he wants. I think it's safer that way.

1 edit | reply to ptrowski My neighbor had a similar experience during a small house fire. I think the guy should be able to sue the cops since it is his right to into his burning house if he wanted to.
I think the moral is no VOIP for me until the 911 issue is totally resolved or keep a single $18 land line phone which is probably what i will do when i switch to FIOS and VOIP for our 2 lines. |

All I'm saying is, my inclination to save a computer would have the same basis as that of the person that runs back into the house to save their photo album. Not a rational act, but do you really suggest to those people "you need to do periodic off-site backups of your family photo album". And, if you do, do the targets of that suggestion look at you like you've got two heads?

And, if you do, do the targets of that suggestion look at you like you've got two heads? -tom You dont need to pay for offsite backups at all. I am simply suggesting that it ALWAYS a good idea to backup ALL your important files. My 200 gig, external Maxtor hard drive automatically does this on a weekly basis. You could also burn DVD's of your photos if you so desired and store them at work for instance (or a relatives!). Furthermore, using a service such as Orb does this for you, for free. These days its far more unlikely that a person, wont have at least a portion of their data backed up in one way or another. If pictures is all you are concerned about backing up then you can use (and share!) all your files with anyone, anytime, over the internet using a program like Shutterfly. You can even purchase all the pictures in paper or digital format if you lose the originals (like say, in a fire). Shutterfly will host all your pics for free assuming in fact, that you will by them. -- Now THATS superfluous!! |
