Photography has been prohibited without permit on the PATH system for years. I discovered it was also not permitted on NJTransit property when I tried last year. The MTA permits it, but the subway cops may or may not be informed about the current rules. I don't know what Amtrak's rules are. It's certainly becoming a more hostile world for photographers.
MTA doesn't permit it anymore. Those new rules they approved last year. One of them was no pictures.

I knew that the MTA had proposed such a rule, but I thought it never made it. Is there any way to confirm this?

Including Times Square and Grand Central, and being a foreigner (Canadian), I must be in BIG trouble with the choice picts I've attached here!

The secret to not attracting attention and still getting the shot? Use a small digital P&S, turn off the flash and zoom out completly. This will allow you to shoot just about anywhere in surprisingly low light conditions.

It's true that security officials are extremely misguided on what constitutes a threat. As was mentioned, the P&S camera is the perfect terrorist tool. Along with general location shots, you could discreetly take a picture of a local map giving you all the strategic locations where you could conduct a terrorist attack.

It's funny. Photographing a police officer in most countries can get you in big trouble. But in Canada, try to get a picture of you and your family standing next to an RCMP officer in full dress uniform, and a few other officers may join in on the fun, one of them on a horse!

For more picts and a complete report of my trip to NYC last summer, go to »www.milnoc.com/NYC .

The rule never became a reality but NYPD has been enforcing it anyway. NY1 has run several stories on this.

It's part of the posted rules and regulations of the PATH system. A short form is in every station, which I assume provides 'proper notification' as to the coditions of use of the service.

Brainless, you are of course right, as we're the blacks regarding equal opportunity and women with the right to vote. Unfortunately they had to resort to matters other than the vote, no one will vote against this, as it is conceived to be of "national importance".
I took my daughter to the park today, she's three months old and was being pushed in her buggy by my wife. I went to take a photo and stopped, not because it was not a great shot, but because I was too concerned with people's children behind her!!! What the hell has happened that makes me NOT take a photo of my baby and wife, because of other people, assuming I'm some kind of monster! It's just a very sad reflection on life.

TMPCHAOS,
So I can't have a coffee either! fairly Draconian rules and regs there. I won't argue with them though as the transit police in most countries are pretty much untouchable! I know that in the UK, they have more power than the normal police in many instances.

They have the regs on the books. They often choose to not enforce certain of them.

They have pretty big guns on them at all times unlike the police. And all of this in D.C., forget other countries.
