| [ Brighthouse] Help with router on Roadrunner please
I just got Roadrunner (Tampabay) installed today and it works great if I connect the PC directly to the cable modem. If I install my Linksys router (BEFW11S4 - and old 802.11b) that I had laying around I can no longer connect to the cable modem. I can see the Linksys from the PC but it appears the Linksys cannot connect to the cable modem. Thinking it may be old settings I had made to the LInksys, I reset everything to factory settings. I also contacted Brighthouse to see if I had to make any special settings but they said the Linksys should work right out of the box. Do I have a Linksys that suddenly broke or is there some magic setting I need to make to have it work with Roadrunner via Brighthouse Tampabay. Thanks. |

1 edit | I know exactly why it won't work. Your modem is only configured to work under one MAC address. In case you don't know, the MAC address is a unique identifier that is assigned to every single networking product made. So, your cable modem is using the MAC address of the network card in your computer. To get the router to work, we're going to need to clone the MAC address from your network card into the the router.
To get your computer online with the router, all you have to do is going into the admin site of your router. Now, go into the 'Setup' tab, and click on the sub tab called 'Clone MAC Address'.
Now enable MAC Clone Service, click 'Clone', and save the settings. You should now be able to get online. If not, unplug the modem for a few seconds, and plug it back in. Hope this helps. |

| You don't have to clone your MAC address, you just have to reset the cable modem when you switch from pc -> cable modem to pc -> router -> cable modem as the cable modem remembers that MAC address
You can have as many PC's as you want on the local side of the router, the cable modem only dishes out on IP unless you pay for more on RR, thats why you have a router in the first place |

I tried that also and it works. I gather from your response that the cable modem stores the first MAC address that it sees and wont recognize any other (keeps with the one PC connection philosophy). By resetting the cable modem it now sees the router as the valid PC. The router will take care of coordinating all the other PCs and only lets the cable modem see itself. If I change routers, I will have to reset the cable modem when I connect the new one.
Thanks for the education. |

| Please, please make this a sticky!!! I guess maybe sum it up in a new post and make that a sticky!
This info is 101 for all users of RR... it will save a TON of time for humanity (the person having the issue and then all those that may need to read a new thread question and then reply...) |

| reply to jajohnson Glad to hear someone else signed up for RoadRunner and is using Linksys router. I just signed up today and they are installing on Wednesday. Any hints about what to expect or do. I have a Linksys wrt54g broadband router. Currently connected to Bellsouth DSL. |

Any hints about what to expect or do. I have a Linksys wrt54g broadband router. Currently connected to Bellsouth DSL. TW gave me a Toshiba modem (long, long ago) and I've been using the Same brand of router that you are using flawlessly for years. The only hitch you might run into is the setup for that router on DSL is far different than what TW uses. Make sure you have the router setup for DHCP on it's WAN side.
Here's a link to the Linksys site that gives you a walk through on the configuration of that router »linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/lin···opview=1 -- "Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue." Scott Adams |

1) the article you linked me to "354" 2) the other setup "1040 Setting up a Linksys Router with a cable modem and a dynamic IP address" |

| I found 2 articles on the site as well. I linked to the one specific to RR. But I'd assume that both are equally valid. See I've had the same router in an Adelphia service area and in an RR service area. I needed no config changes between them. -- "Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue." Scott Adams |

| OK thanks. I printed out the article you directed me to and will use it once we get connected on Wednesday. Wish my daughter had done this a few months ago. We connected to Bellsouth DSL back in January now I have to call them once we're set up and cancel (guess I'll have to pay back the $50 incentive to hookup as well) At least I didn't have to buy their modem. Somebody gave me one. |
