So how would you go about "[destroying] these disgusting granted monopolies?" And I'm looking for realistic ideas here, not your typical fantasy-land stuff.
I'm still amused with how many people are saying that their favorite sites will somehow be "blocked." I've asked for proof of this every time this topic comes up and every time there's this deafening silence at the other end. No one knows how this will be implemented and anyone who claims to know is a liar. Way too many people just buy right into the hysteria.

| You are asking us to disprove a negative, that's not possible. What we ARE saying is there are some logical facts.
Fact #1: They will have the ability to block sites. This has been shown already with Rogers blocking the anti-union site.
Fact #2: Corporations lie. From Verizon in PA, to Enron, to Halburton, it's just what they do, it's their nature to lie. They have no morals, and it's not in their best interest to tell the truth if lying will get them more money. It just IS.
Fact #3: Put the two together. The CAN degrade sites, the hardware exists an is IN TESTING or OPERATION as we speak. They are working on laws to ALLOW them to degrade the quality of other services. And the icing on the cake, they WILL profit themselves by degrading/disallowing competitors. Need proof, go back 3 stories to TWC denying Verizon Ads. That's one company (TWC) denying another company (Verizon) the right to purchase something. Or in other words, Verizon denying Vonage the right to run VoIP. It's HAPPENING TODAY ALREADY. Broadband isn't 'magically' going to avoid the spat the TWC and Verizon are currently having unless there are regulations to prevent it.

If somebody wants a franchise, they can get one. Many cities around the country have competing cable providers right now, and those folks are paying less. The telcos don't want to deal with the local folks; so they want (and will get) the feds to preempt everybody. So much for federalism, never mind the main road block is the cost of the system, not the franchise process. The telcos have had 10 YEARS (since 1996 Act) to build out video systems; they haven't done squat. | |

Keep in mind what you would replace them with, given a vacuum in the "wire to the home" business. AT&T, Verizon, BellSouth?
These companies are NO better.. and most likely worse...
WHY? These companies were combined to an all-powerful all-knowing MA-BELL. A megacorporation who had the power to tell the government to go to hell on reform agenda. So what happened? The company got broken up into smaller pieces, and most lower-level workers lost their pension and retirement benefits, and many lost their jobs. Woo-Hoo, score 3 for the telco, 0 for the consumer. Its taken 15-20 years to see efficiencies that were built into new technology trickle down to the consumer. Which is to say, all those people who were supposed to be the beneficiaries are MUCH OLDER AND Greyer, or deceased.
Who are their consumers now? A younger generation who knows nothing of the old bell monopolies and what they did to the American consumer. Let's not forget, Television, for all purposes, is NOT a utility. Telecom IS a utility, will always be, and for most purposes, will always have that albatrose around its neck, for fear of putting back not Ma-Bell, but Pa-Bell, as in GodFather-MobStyle, respecting no juristiction, or regulation, but its own profit greed.
