will Montgomery county MD ever get fibered?

this is pretty sad.

the verizon fttp construction page (»www22.verizon.com/about/communit···ion.html) for mongtgomery county for March shows 5 locations:

Caltrane Dr
Coltrane Dr
Ridge Rd Rte 27
Running Valley Ln
Wright Rd

The listings for howard and anne arundel counties have over 200 locations, PG county has well over 100 locations. I guess they might finish montgomery county when everything else in MD is done.

Sigh.

Re: will Montgomery county MD ever get fibered?

I know... we are all frustrated. Here we are in one of the most influential parts of the world and we have very little FiOS available. It's part of the politics of MoCo.

Here's a good site about it:

Not sure about the rest of the county, but as long as Rockville has Doug Breisch's brand of "protection", I'd say the answer is: NO!

If we had all those choices, we wouldn't be so anxious about getting FiOS.

I'm not sure about pstauff See Profile, but nasadude See Profile and I have only one "choice" - one that I had to rule out due to issues with reliability.

What makes you think we have all those choices?

I am lucky that I have Verizon DSL. I did have Comcast a while back, but I jumped that ship when they raised the price. Not everyone has the option of DSL though, due to distance limitations or CO availability. I don't have the StarPower option. That is not in my area. I would like the option of FiOS and eventually FiOS TV. FiOS TV is a long way off in MoCo.

Re: will Montgomery county MD ever get fibered?

Yeah, you're lucky pstauff See Profile. At ~19.6k cable feet, I expect I'll leap-frog DSL.

I agree - FiOS TV in Montgomery County is a long way off. I subscribe to DirecTV, so I'm not in a rush for competitive video service. I look forward to getting the PEGs back, but other than that I'm perfectly satisfied with DirecTV.

I feel totally differently about network services though. Don't get me wrong - I love my current provider and would highly recommend them to anyone who can afford them - but I'll be all over FiOS internet (if it ever becomes available) as soon as I can get out of my contract.

Maybe the feds will help.

Is most of lower MontGoCo FIOS'ed? Is it just the upper and western bits that are waiting?

Thanks!

Re: will Montgomery county MD ever get fibered?

As far as I know, Verizon pretty much stuck to their 2005 deployment plans (found here):
»/speak/print/d···12534084

But they never really made much progress beyond that.

I'll be happy to update the map if anyone who's NOT in one of the COs I colored "blue" has FiOS.

I am in 20901 (the part that isn't FIOS'd yet). My CO is on Riggs Rd, Hyattsville..go figure...no idea as to when we will get FIOS. I don't think downtown Silver Spring is FIOS'd either, well at least the last time I checked it wasn't. And yes we feel abandoned.

Do you think this has anything to do with Montgomery County being difficult with the TV franchise and Rockville refusing permits? Does anyone know how each county stacks up in percentage completed?

Being the Former Installation Manager at CTM from 1987 thru 1991, I can tell you dealing with the county exec's and cable commision back then was total hell.

Also dealing with many of the hoa's was one of the worst experiences of my time back then..Politcs and A few arrogant high powered individuals made it impossible to do any type of construction in a timely manor. I feel sorry for the average citizen that lives in Montgomery County MD. The Politicians will jerk you people around for their own greedy power hungry reasons.

According to this document (link found in the comments at Don's blog), there was supposed to be a meeting yesterday. Anyone know if the meeting took place, or what happened?

»gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/ecfs/retr···18331510

3/3/2006: County contacted Verizon to schedule meeting

3/10/2006: Verizon informed County of changes in negotiating team members. Lori Edwards replaces Ed Butts as lead. Scheduled meeting for 3/29/2006.

Re: will Montgomery county MD ever get fibered?

Hey, you're all welcome to move to NJ.

* The glass is steadily being rolled out to more and more towns every few months.

* Cablevision is completing their 15/2 speed upgrade (Comcast is busy redlining the FiOS towns with their "upgrade"). Plus the "fast" tier is 30/2.

* Patriot Media has some great speeds available.

* NJ is a broadband paradise (unless you move into a Service Electric area--blech). Verizon has many remote terminals scattered about.

* If you move to a Comcast town, the customer service and techs aren't hellish like they are in MD.

* NJ isn't all refineries and "Sopranos." We have some beautiful areas that don't bask in the yellow glow of a "Hess Oil" sign.

Don't be so quick to say that. It all depends on how well government owned broadband is run. If it was an option for me I would certainly consider it. Government entities can be run quite efficiently--case in point, last year I had to go to the NJ DMV to get my license renewed (on a Saturday). From the point I got out of my car to the point I was leaving the DMV with a new license (photo and everything) was 16 minutes.

I think I will wait until FiOS TV comes to my town before I switch. The one exception is if I get capped for upload by OOL, then I will switch. I think the cable companies whether they be Comcast or Cablevision will be less likely to do that with comparable competition.

Re: will Montgomery county MD ever get fibered?

Actually, I think cable companies will be more likely to terminate or cap heavy users in competitive areas. Those who get terminated or capped will be less likely to raise a stink - they'll simply move on, as you plan to do. Then cable companies can continue to charge premium prices for "lite" service.

Since cable companies seem much more interested in profit-per-customer than they are in the count of customers, this could work out in their favor.

Think a muni would ever have a policy to impose limits without disclosing the terms?

Goverment run Broadband??
No thank you. are you kidding. when is the last time a government agency was run efficiently? We on long Island took over the private Elec co. _LILCO_ rates have gone up ever since then by way of fuel surcharges.
Again name 1 (one)! government agency that run efficiently and, because is this case there are company's running at a profit doing the same thing, an agency that runs at a profit

PoloDude,

Pretty sure the SEC and the FCC both operate on a net gain.

I know for sure the Federal Reserve operates at a profit, and even charges fees for services based on the idea that they are trying to make a profit (and they do) so as to interfere the minimum with private markets.

I can't get into details but most of the Fed's money isn't technically "theirs."

Uh, what does that prove? Let's see, we pass a law that anybody that wants to trade securities has to be registered with the SEC and that the SEC can charge fees on any security transaction. Not too hard to make a "profit" under those circumstances.

Re: will Montgomery county MD ever get fibered?

right the SEC and the FCC are both regulatory agencies neither of which can the private sector get involved with. The Federal reserve is the same thing but it is technically a corporation.(hard not to make a profit when you print the money
The DMV in NY has gotten a lot better also but again is a government only biz.
Again i would rather put up with fighting my local broadband,tv,phone supplier then the alternative.

PoloDude,

The above makes no sense to me at all. In any event, the Government groups exist generally to provide a service hopefully in an efficient or cost-effective manner. Private industry generally provides goods or services generally for a profit, or at least for enough income to cover expenses.

With your perspective the IRS would seem to be a money-making operation. Actually it provides services such as collection of taxes and enforcement of tax laws and regulations. I guess we should keep the IRS and do away with DOD.

Re: will Montgomery county MD ever get fibered?

how bout we get rid of the IRS as it is a huge waste of money with regulations that they cant even interpret correctly (IRS hot line last year was wrong about 30% last year according to one report i read)go to a flat tax or sales tax and yes also trim down the DOD
Remember the whole point was that as a rule government agencies do not have to worry about a bottom line. when is the last time your taxes went down?

March 2005.

As I may have mentioned before, the NJ DMV is astoundingly efficient. I needed to renew my license and from the point I got out of my car to the point I got in my car on a Saturday, was 16 minutes. This includes getting my picture taken, my renewal application processed, and getting the license made. Oh, and the place was packed to the brim with people. I wasn't anywhere near the first on line either.

well, it looks like if verizon doesn't get to play by it's rules, it won't play.

FCC is useless to consumers; whatever they do about this, if anything, it won't help us.

we'll probably be fiberless until the national franchise bill passes. And then, verizon will probably drag it's feet for a while just to spite the county. Although it looks like the county has reasonable objections to some of verizon's provisions, I wish the hell they would GET OVER IT for our sake and approve the agreement.

Good News:
The list has been updated. 44 is better than 5.

Bad News:
My spouse talked to a Verizon tech yesterday and asked when we'd be getting FiOS. Apparently, the tech muttered something about "trouble from the City of Rockville", and said it'd be at least a year for those of us served by Montrose Road.

@comcast.net

i gave up and got comcast. the tech showed up late and we had to reschedule before that, and the service wasnt even available by the time he left. i had to call tech support a couple days later on Monday to get the prob fixed. But as soon as the thing was up and running, its fine. Sure, upload sucks and the pings could definitely be better, but its a hell of a lot better than dial-up, which is our only other option for internet access.

yes, I was also depressed by the June FIOS construction schedule.

It would appear that verizon has pretty much ceased construction in Monkey county because of the franchise issue. I guess they are waiting until a national franchise bill gets passed or the county completely caves on the franchise requirements.

what an f'ing mess - reminds me of how long it took to get cable TV in the county.
