Verizon is supposed to be at the TAC meeting on June 21st. Why not go and let us know what you find out?
Did anyone go?
Did Verizon show?
Here are some notes and commentary on this week's meeting.

Yep. Is that orange conduit in the city proper?
No. I live about 2 miles west of 270, off Rt. 28. This conduit would have come up from the south, along Travilah road; I have seen the same stuff along Glen Rd. which is south of here. I think that's somewhere in the area where Don Libes lives.

Come on Don,

Tell us what you really think

(Oh, and I suspect I agree), like I said earlier, everyday I'm more convinced a bunch of kids in the ages of K-3 can sort this nonsense out better than those in office now.

Are you sure he's not planning to stick around as county exec? I saw the headline about his pulling out of the Gov race, but I didn't read the article.
According to the Post, Duncan will finish out his term and will not run again. Given that I've never agreed with his telecomm-related decisions, I'd recommend he step down immediately. At his most recent annual meeting with his own advisory committee on telecomm issues, he didn't even show. And if really believes what he said ("Now it's time for me to focus on my health"), then he's got his own reasons to step down.

"Anyway, the "knothead" responsible for this particular mess (County Executive Doug Duncan) won't even be on the ballot again, will he? (the County ballot, that is)"

Looks like Doug is bowing out of politics altogether.

Progress on the horizon?

well crap.

IMHO, looks like verizon is waiting for a national franchise bill. It will be interesting to see what the July construction schedule looks like for Montgomery county. This is really irritating to me, as the pole across the street has orange conduit run up it, all coiled up and ready to go - isn't the orange conduit what they pull the fiber thru?

[sarcasm] oh well, all us comcast customers can be happy, we have POWERBOOST now! [/sarcasm]

JT,

Why would they atttend if they can't get anything accomplished there???

Hmmmm.... seems like the dog's not trying to hunt... more like they are waiting to see if either a state or a national bill will be passed to handle all the franchising nonsensee...

Personally, I'd like to see all the elected officials in the county be recalled and we vote in a bunch of kids from grades K-3 to run the place...

Everyday I'm more convinced the kids could make better decisions for all of us here in the county!

I heard it at the TAC meeting I attended in April. Just goes to show you can't believe everything you hear at a TAC meeting.

I think they said Verizon was invited but at that time it wasn't yet confirmed. I'm really surprised Verizon would pass up the opportunity to speak to the TAC.

I attended and am writing up notes now - there was a fair amount of disinformation distributed which took me several phone calls and emails today to untangle - I'm still waiting for some more to figure out what's really going on. In answer to your specific question: there was no Verizon representative present. Wasn't even on the agenda. Where'd you hear that from anyway?

Here's the PR on the VA legislation:
»newscenter.verizon.com/proactive···id=93304
and the actual legislative text was linked in a previous thread. I knew the status in April, but I am trying to figure out GeorgeJ's remarks whether there has been some hiccup in the process or whether he's talking about something that happend before April.
I have not really kept abreast of Virginia legislation. In March I received information from a city employee of which I am sharing a bit of what they said. It would appear at that point in time they were under the impression that some sort of Virginia law would take effect July 1st. Whether this has changed, I have no idea.

I am paraphrasing what I received from the city at mid-March 2006:

They claimed Verizon had "still not submitted anything to the City."

There was speculation this might be they are waiting to see what happens with proposed legislation addressing the cable television and telecommunications franchising/right-of-way fees. etc. and plan to submit under the new
process.

I was told the Virginia Governor signed legislation, which will take effect July 1. At that time I was told the new legislation would still require Verizon to have to submit an application to the City to begin the process.

I was told the city is as eager as me to see competition, but could not initiate the process themselves under current federal law or the new state legislation. This confused me a bit, as I understand that technically Verizon must likely formally approach the city (e.g. "initiate the process"), however in that other Virginia jurisdictions seem to continue to come to understandings with Verizon, it is not clear why this has not also somehow been taking place in Alexandria. Alexandria has dream geographic and demographic parameters for a service that Verizon would offer. Geographically it is a comparatively small land area to cable out. It has a highly educated, affluent population. In fact, it was among the first areas in the U.S. to begin to receive cable Internet service in the 1990's, when many areas could not.

Again, my gut feeling is that Verizon must have put out feelers, and either the city was simply too slow moving or incapable of deciding on a suitable operating agreement(city staff moves very slowly compared to Fairfax and other jurisdictions, in particular on technology related matters); they wanted too much in respect to fees, rights of way parameters, providing comp services, etc.; the incumbent cable operator has been able to stifle or slow the process down(possible, as they are very politically active in Alexandria).

Hope this helps.

Is the "ordinance franchise" the same as a statewide franchise?

It's referred to as an "ordinance franchise", not a statewide franchise. I haven't had time to comb through it to see what (if any) the difference is.

However, one would think the local muni. workers are following what is going on. I know they are here in Alexandria, Virginia as I got a response back from the cable administrator's office indicating such. I was also told they are following legislation pertaining to a Virginia statewide franchise.
I thought the Governor indicated he would sign the Virginia legislation. Is there some other recent development?
