I haven't heard back yet (it's only been a few hours since I sent it). I wasn't expecting a reply - I was just hoping they'd publish it. Then, maybe others who are in black holes will read my letter and wonder why VZ halted deployment in MC, and we could all storm the County Executive's office together.

Judging from Libes' website, I would say VZ has slowed deployment because of the high rates MC is charging to let them install fiber.

yes, I was also depressed by the June FIOS construction schedule.

It would appear that verizon has pretty much ceased construction in Monkey county because of the franchise issue. I guess they are waiting until a national franchise bill gets passed or the county completely caves on the franchise requirements.

what an f'ing mess - reminds me of how long it took to get cable TV in the county.

This might go on for years if they think no one is watching.

That's not MC, that's Rockville. It's called "protection". Without it, those of us in Rockville and surrounding areas might be directly exposed to lightning fast, reliable, inexpensive internet connections. I don't think every jurisdiction within the county offers this kind of "protection".

You mean they are protecting themselves from folks in Rockville from being able to find out information about Rockville the leaders would prefer you remain ignorant about?

yea, sucks to live in Rockville, MC is not much better. you probably don't want to hear this, but where you live, local government is not at all responsive to letter writing campaigns - it's about political connections.

And the unfortunate part about this is the SHEEP in MC won't do anything to vote these knotheads out of office and put in folks that have rational thinking. What a pity.

Note: Edited because I didn't mean to put words in anyone elses mouth (or from thier finger tips if you prefer)!

I hate it when you put words in my mouth Barney!! I actually like living in Rockville (well, just outside of Rockville, surrounded by the majestic Rock Creek park).

You put words in SD6's mouth too! You made it look like SD6 is calling us SHEEP!!

Anyway, the "knothead" responsible for this particular mess (County Executive Doug Duncan) won't even be on the ballot again, will he? (the County ballot, that is)

Is the possibility of Verizon FIOS getting a Cable TV Franchise in Montgomery County anytime soon DEAD? I have herd nothing new for about a month or so and am guessing that Verizon has given up. Any new info to the contrary out there? I really want to tell Comcast to go screw themselves and there overpriced cable TV, but am thinking I will never get this opportunity. Any new info is much appreciated!!!

Your best hope may be the debate Congress is undertaking respecting a national franchise. I say debate, as present House legislation has a national franchise provision, but not sure if the Senate bill does, and who knows what would happen in Conference. However, one would think the local muni. workers are following what is going on. I know they are here in Alexandria, Virginia as I got a response back from the cable administrator's office indicating such. I was also told they are following legislation pertaining to a Virginia statewide franchise. So, the current rationale for not letting a local franchise agreement to Verizon is Verizon has not formally requested such(hard for me to believe), and they are waiting on national and state legislation. To be honest it sounds like baloney, as I see no reason they could not have moved forward on coming to some sort of understanding. My gut feeling is they want the moon, and it is more than Verizon thinks reasonable to buildout a system. But hey, that is what the local Alexandria Crats have been putting out for public consumption.

Verizon is supposed to be at the TAC meeting on June 21st. Why not go and let us know what you find out?

I think I will try to attend this one. Hey if enough of us MC residents speak up maybe the MC bureaucrats will think the residents care enough to do something.

I thought the Governor indicated he would sign the Virginia legislation. Is there some other recent development?

Here's the PR on the VA legislation:
»newscenter.verizon.com/proactive···id=93304

It's referred to as an "ordinance franchise", not a statewide franchise. I haven't had time to comb through it to see what (if any) the difference is.

and the actual legislative text was linked in a previous thread. I knew the status in April, but I am trying to figure out GeorgeJ's remarks whether there has been some hiccup in the process or whether he's talking about something that happend before April.

I have not really kept abreast of Virginia legislation. In March I received information from a city employee of which I am sharing a bit of what they said. It would appear at that point in time they were under the impression that some sort of Virginia law would take effect July 1st. Whether this has changed, I have no idea.

I am paraphrasing what I received from the city at mid-March 2006:

They claimed Verizon had "still not submitted anything to the City."

There was speculation this might be they are waiting to see what happens with proposed legislation addressing the cable television and telecommunications franchising/right-of-way fees. etc. and plan to submit under the new
process.

I was told the Virginia Governor signed legislation, which will take effect July 1. At that time I was told the new legislation would still require Verizon to have to submit an application to the City to begin the process.

I was told the city is as eager as me to see competition, but could not initiate the process themselves under current federal law or the new state legislation. This confused me a bit, as I understand that technically Verizon must likely formally approach the city (e.g. "initiate the process"), however in that other Virginia jurisdictions seem to continue to come to understandings with Verizon, it is not clear why this has not also somehow been taking place in Alexandria. Alexandria has dream geographic and demographic parameters for a service that Verizon would offer. Geographically it is a comparatively small land area to cable out. It has a highly educated, affluent population. In fact, it was among the first areas in the U.S. to begin to receive cable Internet service in the 1990's, when many areas could not.

Again, my gut feeling is that Verizon must have put out feelers, and either the city was simply too slow moving or incapable of deciding on a suitable operating agreement(city staff moves very slowly compared to Fairfax and other jurisdictions, in particular on technology related matters); they wanted too much in respect to fees, rights of way parameters, providing comp services, etc.; the incumbent cable operator has been able to stifle or slow the process down(possible, as they are very politically active in Alexandria).

Hope this helps.
