| [News] Telephone Service
I received form a Comcast technician that they will soon be offering telephone service in the Maryland area. It will be a VIOP based service, I am not sure if they will provide a separate modem (which he mentioned) or of you already have cable modem service, some device that attaches to it. I already use Free World Dialup »www.freeworlddialup.com/ with a Cisco ATA adapted, but for those looking to move into VIOP, your chance is coming. |

| It'll be different from FWD or other "normal" VOIP offerings.
1. The price will be much much higher. 2. They'll be offering a separate VOIP box and some markets will havea cable box with built in VOIP (RJ-11 port in the rear). 3. It's really only VOIP from your home to their VOIP server, more of a "local area" type VOIP. Not like FWD or Vonage where your call is internet data for nearly all of it's transport. Comcast and other cable VOIP usually do not travel over the plain old internet making it a superior product. 4. If you want to save money, forget about Comcast VOIP. I'd only use Comcast VOIP if I truly hated my local telco. If you make a lot of long distance calls and have a high phone bill, you're better off staying with traditional VOIP providers like FWD, Vonage, ViaTalk, etc. |

| Comcast isn't trying to compete with Vonage,Sunrocket,Packet8 etc; they are competing with Verizon,SBC or whatever the local bell is.
With Vonage and the like, you can play games if your having problems. The VoiP Co's tend to blame your ISP from the start, then you call the ISP and they say we don't support it, can't help you with it.
At least with Comcast's service, if you have a problem, they will come out and fix it. |
