Local cable franchise agreements SHOULD be eliminated.

And the Cable company told, in no uncertain terms, they MUST not absorb the franchise payments as revenue, it MUST be returned to the subscriber in the form of lower monthly bills.

Local Franchise agreements are an anachronism, and contribute to the "Monopoly" the cable company maintains locally.

Maybe the people making the laws should be doing research to make a better choice before they actually vote on making laws and protect the ones that put them in office...

The same professional grifters on the take couldn't even be bothered to read the most draconian, civil rights voiding legislation in the country's entire history before they signed it and you want them to research piddling cable issues before they make it a law? OMFG. Now that's some funny ass shit. Get real. Informed opinions aren't how it works in this country, particularly as it relates to consumers. The name of the game is money. We have the best government that money can buy.

Franchise - hidden (real estate) tax; Astroturf

IMHO, one of the primary purposes these days of the "Franchise" agreements is for a municipality to obtain a hidden stream of benefits, via the cable bill, rather than the up front (real estate) tax bill.

Hey, you want a local studio and $100,000/yr to staff and operate it?
Well, just tack that on to the consumer's cable bill.
That way, it isn't really a municipal expense, right?

Astroturf - cool euphemism for artificial "grass roots".

Sadly, "Astroturf" advocacy groups are a common and very long standing method of obfuscating / advocating on issues.
