Paying for 6 MB, getting ~2.4 MB...

I have had SBC DSL for about a month in N. Richland Hills Tx (new house). I am paying for the 6 MB package and the SBC Speed test (Dallas host) shows only about 2.4 MB. This has been true for the entire time (I thought it may improve after the first 2 to 3 weeks).

I have a Keptel whole house filter installed in the NID, with one run of Cat 5e to my wiring closet for telephone distribution and another run of Cat 6 to the wiring closet where the DSL modem (Speedstream 4100) is located. The modem goes to a Zyxel 35 router (current using only 1 WAN input).

Anybody have any suggestions on how to get better performance? Is this the right forum for this issue?

Does your 4100 show that you are synced at 6016/608 speeds? I take it that you did not upgrade, but have an Expert Plus start up from the get go.

Thanks for the responses. Your right, I did not upgrade, I ordered and expected the 6 MB, Expert Plus from day one. The "sync" speed terminology may have me confused somewhat. The "Current Rate" from the modems Technicians Readout shows 3008/512. I have attached a text version of the Technicians Readout from the Modem taken today. I do have to reconfig the modem to change the PPPOE location in order to get access to the modem for this information. However after reconfiguring I did another speed test with the modem connected directly to a computer. It showed 2.2 MB. Which is consistent with the other tests and with the 3008 "current rate" spec. Maybe someone can tell me what all this means?

Meanwhile, I will see if I can get the profile check going.

The quick answer. A sync speed of 3008/512 means that either a mistake was made somehow/someplace in your order and you received the Pro plan instead of Expert Plus or your loop doesn't qualify for Expert Plus speeds and they gave you the next fastest plan. I'll look over your stats to how your line looks. The techs in Direct will do the same, but I might be a bit faster.

Edit: Here is what I found. Basically the chart says your line is fantastic and will be able to easily handle 6016/608

So unless there is some unannounced speed ramp up to 6016/608 for new loops, then there was some mistake on your order. Either it was taken incorrectly as to be on the Pro plan instead of Expert Plus or you were provisioned wrong. The highly capable techs in Direct can straighten this out.

I see only one missing bin probably due to a local AM radio station at about 1020 KHz on your dial and that is absolutely no problem. I'm predicting that your eventual noise margin once you are at 6016 speeds speeds will be 15.5 dB or higher. Once you actually get your Expert Plus speeds, could you please report your new noise margins so I can verify my prediction methodology. This feedback helps me improve my results. Thank you.

Thanks much DL. Anything you can do is greatly appreciated. I just submitted a TROUBLE report with sbcdirect so maybe between the these two posts I can get something resolved.

Technically Expert Plus is advertised as 1.5-6.0 down and 384-608up. I wouldn't put it past SBC to charge a customer Expert+ prices for Pro Speeds and claim they delivered what they promised.

I'm confident, they will deliver the sync speeds he wanted.

Great! I would much rather it be a mistake of some kind than not be eligible for the faster speed. At least the former has a relatively short term fix. Regarding the noise margins, I don't understand that very well, but I will do a search to come up to speed. Its not clear whether or not a bigger or smaller dB number is better, or for that matter whether or not 15.5 is good or bad. In any case, once resolved I will post another readout.

Thanks again
Gary

Gary, bigger is better for noise margin. Here are a couple of FAQs to get you up to speed:
»Ameritech - SBC FAQ »Line Statistics - What do the dB numbers mean? Whats good? Whats bad?

If SBC inspires such confidence, why didn't they provision his circuit correctly the first time? If you read his email, this is a new install - not an upgrade.

I would demand a fix pronto and also ask for a refund of the last month difference between Expert Plus and Pro. Texas does have a deceptive trade practices act!

Some time back I posted my stats and you said that I had a huge hole in my tone bins that might keep me from getting 6MB service.

Here are my current stats. I can see that they are different than they were before. What do you think?

For "entertainment" purposes only.

I don't see anything at all there that would stop you from upgrading to Expert Plus. In fact,I estimate your final noise margin at 6016 to be 10.0 dB (or slightly better because I suspect your download side isn't running at full power). What did you do to improve that hole?

This graph was produced on a Lotus 123 9.8 spreadsheet. If you have Lotus, then sure you could have a copy of a similar spreadsheet that I use to collect many more stats from my modem.

Here,s the deal on SBC. There is a basic package 750Kbs-1.5Mbs. Then there is pro for 1.5-3.0 Mbs and then there is the not offered anymore expert + 3.0-6.0Mbs. this expert plus has not been offered since October of 2004.
Also, about SBC having confidence, I have had 3 friends that live 4.5 miles away from their CO and SBC delivered the DSL modem equipment to their locations. Once they state they can not connect for some reason, 3rd Tier support finally figures out they're too far away from the CO. They were promptly refunded their charges for the first month.

say....d_l...not anyway you could fancy up a graph for my line and somehow make out what the numbers are to me and LMK if I could go to the 6mb plan? ty

Sure. Start a thread and post your tech stats like the ones GB34 did (the stats from firmware 1.0.0.53 are better because they have the upload side). The line errors are left out of the above stats so we won't touch on that aspect, i.e. whether your line is noisy or not.

Expert Plus is certainly offered again these days. My point is it's downstream is rated as 1.5-6.0. This of course makes absolutely no sense, but it is what it is.

yes, i see that it is offered by AT&T / SBC now or whatever they call themselves now (as just read on another forum). I just find it funny, that when AT&T bought SBC in Jan, they still have 2 websites now. AT&T says aye to the expert plus package while the SBC site says nay. and you're right, 1.5-6.0 makes no sense, should be 3.0-6.0

Its retarded. If someone can't sync at 6.0 and only 1.5 or 3.0, wouldn't they downgrade to pay less?
