Take your hispeed internet wherever you go, thanks to Rogers

Finally some good news for Rogers, this oughta make some people whove been complaining about wanting high-speed but not living within the coverage areas happy.

But how portable is it? Considering the modem is about the size of a Sb5100 and needs to be plugged into a wall outlet. So to me that is not so portable.

The SB5100 isn't that big...

Anyway, nice that they're finally offering wireless net access (not that I'd use it...love my cable modem just fine).

The modem comment was directed at Aqualung40, since he that it's not really portable like that.

EDIT: My bad, I didn't realize I clicked you're name when replying. Thinking linearly here, don't really think of it as a threaded reply.

Fido had been testing this service for months before Rogers bought them; so that's probably where Rogers got the technology from. Fido's website said the maximum speed was 2Mbps, Rogers website only says it's 25x faster than dial-up, and faster than hi-speed lite (1Mbps). Since Fido was testing it before Rogers bought them, I assume it operates over the cell phone network.

Since Bell recently started offering Ev-DO on their cell phones (2.4Mbps), that should encourage Rogers to step up their UMTS development, which should mean 5-6Mbps, with nothing more than a cell phone or a pc card. Last I heard Rogers was going to start trials for UMTS this fall.

Well, if they can get faster speeds, I'd be interested
Wireless technology does require good security though unless you don't mind people leaching off you're connection!

Ever think of getting those 12V to AC power converters from Canadian Tire? Sounds like you might have a high speed wireless connection in the car after all.

1.5 Megabits Down
256 Kilobits Up

Monthly cap at 30 Gigabytes

Costs are:

$49.95 / month

modem costs $99.95
shipping charge $9.95

Requires a 1 year term - but there is a 30 day chicken-out money back

This looks interesting

The portable device is about the size of an existing cable modem - it runs over 2.5 Gigahertz (the Fido wireless / Inukshuk stuff that Roger's acquired) - has an ethernet port can be used in a bunch of cities across Canada

We are talking about wireless. Although everyones idea for wireless is different.

Mine is being able to take it anyhere. Therefore i would like a pc card sized device for my notebook. The speed is not so much an issue.

I don't need to be downloading from newsgroups or torrents at 10MB/s while sitting in a coffee shop or in the park. I will do that at home.

I think the real advantage for this, as the OP noted, would be for people who live in areas where the only other options would be dial up or satellite.
