Re: Game Download Softwares are Junk!

What does Steam have to do with this? Valve has its own content servers so you never upload anything. Steam only updates games that you have set to auto update and only when Steam is running. Most people think this is a good thing, especially since you can't play the online games without updating. I would rather Steam download the update while I'm sleeping than have to download it when I want to play. But Steam is off-topic since it's not even close to being the samething.

What Blizzard did is BS. The function should have been disabled by default, not the other way around. It's unfortunate that these companies get away with things like this because your average joe doesn't have a clue to what's going on.

This is the essential difference. In fact I would go so far as to say that Blizzard has really set themselves apart from what a typical game company does for distributing updates for their flagship product, and not in a good way.

Well you know what they say: It's easier to apologise than to ask for permission.

Last time I played ANY of my online games, I couldn't play online until I downloaded the newest patch... No "manager" involved!

Steam is a manager. You can't play the game without it. Screw that!

Blizzard just took it a step further, again - Screw that!
You go right ahead and use whatever you wish on YOUR computer, I'll pass thank you!

Er, you realize that you don't have to download the patch using the bittorrent client right? You can easily find another free webserver to download the latest patch from. Yes, you can argue that you shouldn't need to but it's not like no other options exist for people. I do agree that they went too far with the BT background downloader and it should be changed (unless they provide discounts for their subscriptions based on how much you upload - of course, this would lead to many other troublesome problems) but somehow I'm feeling you just have something against WoW and want to make a crusade out of it.

WTF? No, I have something against *ANY* game manager software that has to be on my machine just so I can play a game. Not happening!

Whether it is Blizzard/Steam/whatever, it's bullshit!
Blizzard just totally stepped in it with this BT uploading fiasco!

As I said, if any of you don't mind a manager just to play a game... Go For it!
Not for me!

That's the thing -- It doesn't -have- to be on your machine. You can delete it. You can quickly and easily download the patch from filefront and apply it.

That aside, WoW is boring anyway.

---------------------------

Does nothing in this case sorry to say.

When you boot WoW now, the client starts up with it in the background. So long as you're playing, its allowed to upload.

In some cases, the process doesn't terminate and you'll still see it uploading as well. Ugh. If you read the forum thread linked, you'll see people talking about this point.

The crap bliz did this time is outright shady. You can't disable it, as it re-enables next time opened.

If they made it voluntary, and even better, gave discounts because you're saving them bandwidth....that'd be one thing. They do no such thing. You deal with the headache, they rake in the cash.

you have no choice but to down load the pathches to play. if you try to log in and dont have the newest patch you HAVE to download it or you cant play. all other MMORPGs are the same way.

you cant play without the current version because all of the game infomation is on your machine but all the content comes from their servers, you just cant play without matching...

so why worry about it automatically patching?

xelnix

@res.rr

Because it is installed without the users knowledge or permission, and autoruns itself and will continue to run in the background saturating your upload as you play. At least they can blame their horrible network lag on something else now, instead of actually, you know, fixing the problem!!

Wrong again!
I will play my Non-managed games online! I have this thing recording tv for when I go to bed(DVR built-in).

I say again, *ANY* game manager is crap! There is no reason for a third party manager to be running just so I can play a game. If the game will not play without said manager, game doesn't get purchased.

One lost sale.

Sounds like someone is a cheater and a warez user.

The those are the only conceivable reasons for being against the steam system. It's main reasons (besides convenient and efficient distribution of the software) are to prevent piracy of the software, and cheating within the software.
