Re: Should I Be Concerned About Download Cap

Didn't the first person who ever posted in this forum about the download cap get "lettered" because of streaming audio?

As Dadkins said you can stream all the audio you want and it wont be a problem. The only people running into problems are people usually well over 100 GB a month. i stream audio damn near non stop and have never heard a peep from them about it. we have 3 computers going doing normal surfing, streaming music, vonage works great!, and downloading some large files here and there. also the percentage of people that have received letters at all is so small in comparison to the MILLIONS of customers there are.

I think the incident you're referring to was when someone was streaming a couple dozen radio stations and using software to break up songs and save them as mp3s, all automatically.

If I remember correctly, he was doing enough radio stations that it added up to something pretty substantial in the end in terms of bandwidth.

One or two radio stations for a couple of hours isn't going to do nearly as much damage as ~50 or so 24/7.

Here's the original:
»Comcast Bandwidth Exceeded Notice!!!

It was 5 stations, not a couple dozen. So I guess the streams can eventually be cause for concern.

#1 that was in 2003...

#2 OP never eludes to what else he was doing with his connection...

I think something was left out of the equation.

hqh510 See Profile estimated 50-100GB in addition to the streams.

So the streams seem to be what pushed hqh510 See Profile over the limit.

I'm the OP and, wow, I think I'm a bit misunderstood

Really, my son is looking to listen to about 2 to 3 games a week, late nite, on his computer. He loves the Atlanta braves and we get bad A.M. reception at nite - thus the need for streaming.

No hidden agendas here in my post. I'm not interested in torrents, downloading porn, or being a burden to my neighbors in bandwidth usage.

Just hoping he could listen to the games and still feel like a good citizen of the web. So far, I'm thinking that everything is o.k., although a couple of posts have implied that maybe, just maybe there might be a problem.

I really appreciate the replys. I get a lot of info from this forum. I wish I could find some topic that I could help someone with in return. Let's see - I have Vonage, use a Mac and avoid Microsoft when possible and am passionate about Ga. Tech football. So, I think I'm pretty isolated.

I agree with dadkins that hqh 51 story about his connections and downloads wasn't complete or his guesstimates on the size of downloads were in error. It's quite preposterous to suggest that normal audio streaming of one source at a time would result in any abuse letters. But then preposterous notions are quite prevalent on this board. as conclusions are often driven by agendas rather than reality or logic.

That's the situation most Comcast customers are in. Not much you can do but guess and hope.

Good luck.

As I stated at the beginning of this thread... 27MB per game will *NOT* push you over any limit!

Tell your son to go ahead and enjoy his games!

Keep in mind though... "dadkins at BBR's Comcast Forum said it would be ok" probably won't get you too far, just in case it's a wrong guess.

LOL! If you think 324MB per month is going to flag someone, ya need to get a different calculator, or change the batteries in the one you're using.
I download game demos WAY larger than that! More often too!

27MB per game x 3 games per week = 81MB

81MB x 4 weeks per month = 324MB.

Not even 1/3 of a GB... No worries!

Comcast's caps vary by region. Do you live in the same region as the original poster?

MILLIONS of customers have no problem streaming audio. doing the math listening to 3 games a week you will be under 1 gig a month. anyone that tells you you need to worry about 1 gig a month obviously has an agenda to lie to you. be careful of people that dont even have comcast HSI but come here just to post negative info everyday about them.

Everything ive read and seen people get letters for on here has been in excess of 100 gigs a month. some of these people are 600-900 gigs a month. doing the math that means they were downloading all day and night everyday. while they were sleeping they were downloading. from what your explaining thats not you, so I wouldnt worry 1 bit and let your son enjoy his games.

But he's an "MVM"! That has to account for something, no?

Yeah, I know, that and a buck 85 will get you coffee at Starbucks.

LMAO! 324MB. Do you REALLY think that is going to push *ANY* Comcast customer over a limit? Any limit?

Tell ya what, download this:

Disregard the MVM tag... do the math!
324MB is not going to raise any flags... for any Comcast customer, in any Comcast market.

I totally agree. 100 times that won't raise any flags either.

There's a guy at work that just got nuked from Comcast, he was pulling upwards of 300g / month. He was of the mindset that believed that if he wasn't pulling max bandwidth 24x7 he wasn't getting his money's worth so he ignored the 2 warning shots. He quickly realized that it's speed, not volume, that Comcast is providing.

And for anyone who gets "lettered", remember to say that "dadkins" AND "jansm38" at BBR's Comcast Forum assured you it would be ok to download up to 600GB per month.
