| Replace SS5260, Need 5 Static IP Support, What's Best?
Background: - Ameritech DSL since 2001 - SpeedStream 5260 - PPP0E running on a dedicated Fedora Linux box, serving as home network router - 5 static IP package - Linux router gives me lots of flexibility (I like) - Service works very well. I am happy.
Problem: - Linux box getting old. - I would like a solution that replaces both my linux box and the SS 5260 (combined modem/router)
I looked at the following FAQ: »Ameritech - SBC FAQ (search for "5 Static IP") and »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »Any Funhouse/Ameritech info on the 5 Static IP packages?
So I think I am on the right track but I wanted to confirm some things.
I like the 2-Wire box. and I am thinking of getting it. I have some questions and am looking for the perspectives of the experts on this message board:
- The 2-Wire does have good routing/NAT/filtering support for 5 static IP addresses, right?
If I get the 2-Wire box or any of the other boxes recommeded in the FAQ:
- Do I have to buy it thru SBC? Or, can I get it from any third party or eBay?
- Can I set it up myself, or do I need to call SBC to get help from the technical team? I would like to do it myself.
- I know my pppoe parameters. Are there other parameters (ATM?) that I need to get from my 5260? Or other quirks for a static IP user (I assume that the FAQ-»Ameritech - SBC FAQ »How to setup an AT&T DSL Connection manually from scratch! is all I need)
- By doing this, will I be forced onto a different billing plan or other administrative thing?
I appreciate the helpfulness of the experts on this forum.
Best Regards, JK |

| I have the 2Wire 1701HG and it seems to be an OK unit except that it is not good on marginal connections. It's visiting here from my Sprint DSL setup in Florida because it flat-out refused to sync last time I was down there. The line is in the upper 50's for attenuation but the noise margin is in double digits. Brought it here to test.
The firewall is OK but not necessarily robust, and not nearly as good as what you have in your Linux setup.
It also adds about six milliseconds to latency. The 802.11b/g capabilities are OK but nothing to get excited about.
You don't need any "assistance" from SBC and you certainly can do it yourself. No account changes are required. Anything that supports DMT DSL and PPPoE will work. However if you want to use all of your static IP addresses you need to make sure it can do "multi-NAT" or can assign public addresses directly to the LAN. The 2Wire can do that. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

| reply to kozik why not run on down to tigerdirect and get one of those ibm desktops they have for really cheap.
as for age of the linux box my firewall/nat box is a very old compaq deskpro2000 p233 384mb ram and a 3.2 gig drive. i will be updating soon due to the onboard nic flaking out. time for those celeron 400 parts to come out. |

| reply to kozik I've got one of the 2Wire 1800 units, designed for multiple IPs. From what I understand, the other 2Wire units can do the same thing if you plug them into a switch, but I'm not the 2Wire expert.
You'll really want to use the
http://homeportal/management URL to configure the unit, as there's a lot more to work with than the standard interface. It's not as pretty, but it's helpful.
I'm not a fan of the way you assign public IPs to private addresses with the unit, but it doesn't require that you do that either. If I didn't already have a boatload of experience with the Siemens products, I'd probably be very happy with the 2Wire. |

I have been fighting a 1701HG for two months and am not a happy camper. It's ability to hang onto sync, even on a decent line, is marginal. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |
