[General] VOIP and FOIP Information

I have noticed time and time again, on this board people post about wanting VOIP and FOIP on the same line. Below is a link that to a website that i found that explains, VOIP and FOIP, and why FOIP has such as hard time working with VOIP lines.

Note: There is a table of contents at the bottom of the above mentioned website that allows you to get right to the FOIP pages.

Re: [General] VOIP and FOIP Information

Excellent post indeed. Many manufacturers are taking the lead, as they have always done in the past, to make their products work on VOIP circuits instead of expecting the other way around. Since the beginning of the telephone, different technologies have found ways to adapt different uses to that telephone technology.

Many alarm companies have already implemented their own adapters used to allow their alarm dialers to accurately work over a voip circuit. When customers are paying high dollars for such security service, the vendor will adapt. While it may still be a while before fax machine manufacturers adapt their machines to work directly on VOIP, it would be interesting to see if one of these alarm adapters could be used on a fax/voip configuration.

If anyone out their has an alarm system on VOIP that had an external adapter included to make it work on voip, it would be interesting if you could try it on a fax machine. I've seen the devices, and it's a simple black box with rj-11 in and rj-11 out. Sort of like a dsl filter but larger and box shape. Of course if you try it, call the alarm company first and tell them you will be working on the electrical system or something and disable the alarm.

Anyway, an excellent article. Maybe if these alarm adapters work, someone could probably make a lot of money. Later... Mike...

What I never understand is how hard for the VoIP industries to make a dedicated FoIP through TCP instead of UDP. With TCP, packets can be retransmitted if they didn't reach the destination. This way, the FAX is ensured to reach its destination. Since FAX doesn't need to be in a real-time transmission, it is OK with TCP.

TCP increases jitter, which is a Bad Thing.

Christcorp,

Would like to know how that works out too. I think it could prove to be very interesting, if it did work for faxes as well.

I can see still questions about VOIP and faxing. So i decided to give this post a bump. Again, the information on the page mentioned above contains good detail about why Faxing over VOIP doesn't work well. And exactly how FOIP (faxing) and VOIP (voice) are different.
