Thanks for the tip, Djdeadly. Indeed they do provide great latency from where I am.
But I still consider the new "feature" a bug. Besides, it won't help with the stated problem - non-existing domains do not return a 404 code; there is no http server to respond. My browser (Firefox) responds with an alert that the site "could not be found. Check the name and try again." If that is too confusing take it up with the browser folks, but don't muck with DNS.
P.S. Two other points: A major change like this should have been communicated to your customers. And don't expect all your customers to know that this is the forum where they can learn which DNS server to use. |

| reply to socio Last night had several on-line and telephone dialogues with various techs. Explained what was happening (a few didn't know about this "change")---specifically that saving opting out cookie was not working even when "saved" under exceptions rule. More importantly, when entering part of a URL (e.g. Dell, CNET, DSLExtreme)in address bar, which under former setup, would then automatically complete the address and take you directly to the correct site, under new set up MSN search engine would pop up with a list of various items. Very frustrating.
Finally, tech understood problem and helped me to change primary and secondary DNS settings which has totally resolved the problem.
Strongly urge anyone with similar problems to either change settings yourself (if you know how) or get DSLExtreme tech to help you. |

1 edit | reply to socio Add me to the list of very satisfied customers that are pretty upset about this change. I can understand the need to cut down on some tech support calls, but this is rather ridiculous. This is something I would never expect from DSLExtreme. It's really making me wonder about this merger.
Also, if you decide that this must be implemented, please setup another DNS server for us 'tech-savvy' people to use that does not contain this DNS advertising. |

| reply to socio follow the money. The new owners of dslxtreme must have decided to optimize their purchase. The search redirector shows ads paid by doubleclick and does click tracking and kickbacks. The owner of look-up-results.com is hidden by a domain proxy but perhaps it is owned by dslx themselves. classy act. not. |

George, Ari, this is not the time to be pulling this sort of crap. The "acquisition" of DSLX has us all nervous enough about the future of a great ISP. This puts a VERY bad taste in my mouth.
If you just wanted to reduce support calls from 404 errors, you could redirect people to a DSLExtreme page with a better description with no ads on it.
You've been in this industry long enough to know damn good and well how people feel about "hijacking" mistyped URLs. Have you forgotten how well people received Verisign's attempt at this same thing?

| reply to justin I searched for this thing and came up with this thread on [H]: »www.hardforum.com/showthread.php···28338760
Quoting from a user there:
It has been implemented by Choice One Communications into their national dial-up POP network, which many virtual ISPs such as Intergate and All2Easy.net use to provide local access numbers throughout the US.
Another mention of this with a dial-up user (different ISP than before): »forums.spywareinfo.com/lofiversi···440.html
It was mentioned that IKANO is big in dial-up. I wonder if they're connected to these other ISPs that have implemented this search "feature"? -- Bill SocalServer.com: LA Game Servers Check out our public servers |

| reply to socio What's the problem?
Personally I don't see an issue with this. Boo hoo, I don't get a 404 page when I don't type a site in correctly. What's the big deal? There's 2 big advantages here:
Advantage 1: What they're saying is the reason. People call because they get a 404. That ties up reps from dealing with real problems. If they free up those reps, hold times go down, when a user has a real problem they get support quicker.
Advantage 2: Perhaps they are getting paid for clicked through links. Hey, that's another revenue stream for them, which means that they can pass costs onto that revenue, rather than onto the customer, which would result in higher rates.
Disadvantage: Instead of a 404, I get a page of potential other relevant links, and if I really want my 404, I have to follow a couple of steps to opt-out.
Simple enough! |

I expect a pure internet connection. I don't want proxies, filters, or DNS games unless they are there in the interest of security or, at a minimum, are disabled in a user control panel.

As a dedicated DSL Extreme customer, I have to say this "feature" appears to be nothing more than an advertising ploy much like the "Verisign" debacle several years ago.
I will use a search engine and if I mistype the URL, a 404 error is perfectly acceptable. IMHO, this should be an opt-in, not an opt-out, particularly as such an arrangement reeks of advertising revenue and severely tarnishes my opinion of DSL Extreme.
Very disappointed, Chris White |
