Actually you would be surprised by how many Joe Blows call in about this problem. I work tech support for dialup service and get calls all the time relating to Page cannot be displayed.

Usually the culprits can be tracked down to crappy phones lines, crappy modem, or ta da...Norton Security. Then again I would deem IE unsafe myself, but that is issue is totally different.
If any of those issues are the cause for the 404s the "redirect" BS isn't going to be able to solve anything, thus won't reduce the number of calls. I think these idiots are just looking for more cash.

This doesn't make sense, you get a 404 when the server name is valid but the requested resource isn't there. If they are acutally redirecting in these cases, they must be inspecting HTTP packets for 404 error codes. If that's the case, changing your DNS server won't do a thing.

If they are redirecting when you do a lookup on a non-existant domain name, that's a different issue and switching DNS servers should fix the problem... but that isn't a 404.

yes i could use new dns and that's what i am doing using verizon dns. However when isp company starts doing this type of stuff it usually means that other stuff will happen. At this point i am not going to switch but being i am out of contract i will switch if anything else gets changed for the worse

SO just use alternate DNS servers..

SBC, CA: 206.13.31.12
206.13.30.12
206.13.29.12
206.13.28.12

Qwest: 205.171.3.65
205.171.2.65

UofM: 128.101.101.101

If they are using DNS as the point of redrect, simply use other DNS servers out there.

If you have a hosting provider for webhosting, use their DNS servers..

There are pleanty of options.

What they are doing is 100% B.S. and should not be.. however, make a choice and switch DNS or switch providers. Maybe they will get the message. If you are using SBC already for the DSL line, simply call DSL and have them swith you to them as an ISP or grab another one of the providers in the list.

haven't happen to me yet, but if they start doing that and much more i may just jump to sbc. I was hopping that no changes would happen as result of dslx being sold but guess was wishful thinking
