And if that is the case, you also have to reenter your username here at DSLR so are we all going to start whining about DSLR? And if that is too difficult, use someone else's DNS.
OR, vote with your feet and cancel your service. Whining will do little to fix it. THe only thing ANY of these providers understand, whether it's and indy ISP, telco or cable giant is losing subscribers. So long as people keep forking over the money, they don't care how pissed you are.

| 'Cause there are very simple work arounds. While the appearance of this is troubling only because it makes me wonder what direction DSLx is going in, but in this issue itself, I think people are way overreacting. Changing DNS is no trouble (I already use VZ's DNS so I was unaware of this until I read about it) and using the dumb cookie isn't either.

Those who are simply annoyed (like me) or wonder if this is the first step of something bad (like me) should update their reviews to reflect their feelings and warn others to not sign contracts with DSLx until we see what direction the new management goes in.

DSLx has inserted an opt out function (placing a cookie) that stops the automatic redirects. Switching DNS servers gets around this whoring completely. You should probably read the article and visit the DSLx forum about this before replying.

Why should anyone have to vote by cancelling service? What does that do for the customer? Absolutely nothing. Complaining, and making other people know about it, that benefits the consumer, or at least hurts the vendor, which is the objective.
Now before you go off and say 'it's their network, they can do what they want' or 'use the cookies', I have to respond NO. It's NOT THEIR NETWORK. They do not get to redefine how DNS works. PERIOD. DNS works a certain way. Billions of devices that plug into the internet work, because DNS works a certain way. Once someone decides to change how that works (i.e like DSL Extreme did), then they are deliberately breaking the internet. The uproar over verisign was well deserved, and verisign backed down BECAUSE everyone bitched at them. DSL Extreme management is coming across as a bunch of dumb ass greedy dickwads. As well they should. Breaking the way the internet works to make more money IS a dickwad move, and DSL Extreme should be severely punished for that.

I don't think you're following what I'm saying. Let me try again. Their so-called opt-out DOES NOT fix the problem. The reason is that the DNS lookups their servers return are still broken. A cookie cannot fix this. All the cookie does is prevent the search page from displaying. This is not a fix. A fix is for the DNS servers to not resolve a non-existant domain. As long as they're resolving non-existant domains, they're broken.
If DSL Extreme wants to fix this, they need to do one of two things:
1. Fix their broken DNS servers.
2. Set up alternate DNS servers that work correctly. An even better approach is for the alternate DNS servers to be the broken ones. That way, by default, users use the correctly-working servers. If someone calls in to support asking why they're getting these error messages about sites that don't exist, the tech can get them to point their computer to the broken servers. Poof! No more error pages, and this issue doesn't bother anyone else. That makes this whole mess opt-in. |

DSLX will look and say "look! 5 more happy customers" instead of "LOOK! 5 more very unhappy customers".
If you're unhappy with this new 'feature', make it known, give them a very bad review just because of this. They pride themselves in having good reviews here at DSLR, make them regret their decision.

| I think an argument could be made that "fixing" the redirection "mistake" would properly involve eliminating it on the original DNS servers, not making your customer base reconfigure their end to avoid it.
This sounds like a eat cake and have it too solution.

2 edits | Oh for crying out loud. Come on guys, is it really that difficult to change your DNS settings? Takes all of 10 seconds. The cookie solution wasn't good enough so people asked for new DNS servers. DSLx does it virtually instantly and people still are complaining about it.
Seems some people complain for legitimate reasons and some complain just for the sake of complaining.

I do see your point and I do agree, but I think it's poor business practices to even think that this is acceptable. To further insult their customers, they make it an automatically 'opt-in' option.
